[#10494103]

My daughter is at Cardiff Uni for an all day visit this week.

She’s just shared the brief from the Uni stating “parents are free to enjoy a day in Cardiff”

So it’s February, my MTB is at the LBS for work, but I can get my road bike in the boot of the car. I’ll have 4-5hrs free.

Are there any decent 30/50mile routes available locally?
Any recommendations appreciated thanks

I think you’ve got to say Welshfarmer 3 times.

Lots of people here ride road. And there are loads of great routes locally from Cardiff.
Give a time & day, and level of fitness, and I sure you’d get someone to guide or offer you to ride.

Ditto @mooman. I could be one of those, but it will depend on your fitness level, as I’m still in recovery mode.

You have a few options. Either a hilly/mountainous ride north or north east or a rolling ride to the west. My choice would be to head west through the Vale of Glamorgan. Maybe a circular route north of the A48 turn south to Llantwitt Major or Ogmore then head back riding parallel to the coast through Llancarfan, Wenvoe.

Maybe this route https://ridewithgps.com/routes/29060847

Or my route https://ridewithgps.com/routes/11562267

Lots of quiet lanes in the Vale of Glamorgan. Rolling Welsh lowlands.

I can give you a GPX. However it's a shame you haven't got the MTB cos that's a better bet from Cardiff tbh.

Or I could ride with you depending on day.

Can you get to Newport velodrome? Something different. About 25 minutes away.

You can't just pay and ride at the velodrome though.

You can if you pay a LOT 😉 , but yes, you’d need to look at introductory sessions first. See what’s on that day.

Thanks all for the suggestions.
Just back in from a long day in London, gonna sling the bike in the boot and see how I feel in the morning.

Had considered driving up to Black Mountains and then riding on to Sennybridge / Epynt but I reckon I’ll be in the car too long.

May explore the Vale of Glamorgan suggestions - have downloaded the OS maps, ta!

that top one linusr links to is the one I'd suggest, nothing to hilly but some nice views and ride around the coast, I do a version of that most weekends.

Thanks all. I managed to escape a little later than hoped but did manage to squeeze in a 27mile loop around St Fagans to St Hilary area.
Had to be quite cautious on the clarty lanes and it p’d down for about 20mins but loved the area.
Narrow, flowing and not too hilly (!).

I did have a white van follow me up one of the hills, and then pulled in beside me at a passing place. Here we go I thought>
He wound down his window and shouted...”not too bad up there, a constant 18mph all of the way up!”

Honestly had been expecting grief “not too bad for an old man” was my response!
