managed to dent yet another rim at the weekend - will straighten it up with grips, but got me to wondering whether carbon rims would be a benefit regards this problem, or would they be more likely to just crack?

IME they'll shake off many impacts which would dent an alu rim, but if you do get a big enough impact then they will crack.
