I was just about to go for a Mondraker Foxy RR, when someone on Irishdh.com suggested a Canyon.
Holy s**t they look and sound amazing!. It's insane what you are getting for your money.
I'm now looking at this one.

http://www.canyon.com/_en/mountainbikes/bike.html?b=2099

Anyone ridden a Canyon at all?. Although the Strive is being touted as an enduro bike with 160mm of travel, do you think i'd be able to ride it XC and on the odd road, (to get to trails)?.
With the travel adjusted down on the front and rear shock this shouldn't be an issue right?.

My heart is telling me to take out the credit card and my head is telling me to get some well rounded advice. As i'm only getting back on the bike after a long time away from it and only really rode light xc. Want a really versatile all mountain now.

Thanks!

A friend just got one, first ride last weekend. Frame quality seems very good and so far he's more than happy with it. Predictably, with ProPedal flicked on at the back and the fork set to 120, climbing ability is much improved. The overall weight is about a pound more than stated but he has a large. There's no doubt that it's a lot of bike for the money.

I don't think I've seen a bad word written about Canyon bikes - the main problem for most people seems to be the wait for delivery. Haven't seen one in the flesh myself though. Isn't there a money back if not satisfied guarantee with them ?

Just to throw a spanner in the works, I have just taken delivery of a Canyon Nerve AM 8.0. I was torn for ages between this and the strive and was really worried the nerve was going to be too XC. It turns out its mega. I am amazed how good it is. Really agile and feels bombproof. Admittedly its my first full suss but its made a huge difference to what I can ride and drop. It also climbs way better than my 456 hardtail.

Worth checking out this Italian forum (let chrome translate it for you) which lots on the strive

To throw in a curveball there is an interesting thread developing on canyon bikes on bikeradar. It would appear their customer service to deal with warranty issues is rather lacking, also there seems to be some issues with cable routing causing high wear in important areas.

I hasten to add I'm not an owner, the posters on that thread are.

Hi lewymtb
I bought a strive ES8 about 3 weeks ago (well, it was delivered then)
Took around 5 weeks from order to delivery
All i can say is BUY ONE NOW. It really is a superb bike, very well put together, great components, great price, no issues as in the other thread!
I had a Trek fuel ex 8 before and although it is a wee bit heavier (about 3 pounds) you really do not feel it.
I have done all my usual climbs as easily, if not easier on the canyon, and descending is a completely different experience.
Wind the fork down to climb and your away, even on full travel its very good. Full XT shifters, rear mech & cassette are very smooth and the 2 x 10 is so natural to use.
They changed the front mech to SLX as it wasn't compatable with the Stylo chainset, but they refunded the price of the bikeguard (delivery box) as compensation, cool.
The chain device is very quiet and smooth and with internal cables there is no noise at all.
All in all 10/10
And you will be the envy of your mates too!!

The Nerve XC and AM reviews have been superb. A friend of mine is looking at an AM soon and that got me looking at the website (at XC's, 120mm is enough for me).

The kit level for the price is amazing. I have been becoming increasingly depressed by the price rises in bikes and especially components in recent years - very little of it explained by Sterling's falling value. The price differential for bikes here compared to the US is a joke - I was considering buying one in the US and going there to fly it back next time around!

Look at the Canyon specs and there are no corners cut. Their builds would cost an absolute fortune to replicate as a private buyer. They also use a lot of brands (DT Swiss, Easton, Syncros) I like. If buying a bike now I would have a hard time looking past the Nerve XC with full XTR. My last three bikes have been Santa Cruz's I have built from the frame up (trying to buy end of life/discounted where possible) but trying to do that nowadays would be a waste of huge amounts of money.

Direct sales model for me next time I think - other manufacturers need to take note. I don't get this "support your LBS" rubbish either. When I buy a car or laptop or whatever I am not falling over myself to pay over the odds to support a local business, why with bikes? LBS have a valid role but for people confident enough to choose/set up their bike on their own, making margin on new bike sales is not the be-all.

Looking at the spec and pricing - basically you're getting the frame and shock for free.

<£3000 for Havens/XTR/Fox 36 FITs/Reverb!

In fact the only thing I don't like about the spec is the Avid brakes. There are some models with Formulas though.

If I was in the market for a new bike one of them there Canyons would be top of the list.
