Considering maybe getting one of these to run a hammerschmidt setup on (seems like the Canfield 'ONE' parallel link setup should be OK running in what is essentially a permanent granny ring setup?)

So, wondering if anyone on STW has one? Or tried one?

They're on closeout at half price in the States at the moment, works out to be £840 delivered + VAT/duty, so seems a pretty decent deal... though not sure if this includes a shock, have emailed them to check 🙂

all thoughts and advice appreciated, thanks 🙂

Cheers MrNutt, was there any reason why you didn't choose either? What did you end up going with?

Had a reply from Chris at Canfield, it includes an RP23... so £840 delivered + VAT/duty is a pretty decent deal?

Hmmm, decisions decisions...

The canfield brothers were "making go anywhere and survive" bikes before anyone else had even thought of the concept. Some very nice bikes.

I ride Canfield Jedi and all I can say it rocks.
I took it to the Alps last year. For those familiar with Les Gets there is a mega bumpy track (I do not remember the name) that people dislike because of those bumps.
My feedback would be that because of the rearward travel I barely felt the bumps, whereas my forks could not cope with them at all.

I also ride Canfield CanCan and it like it a lot. On one hand it is mega fun to do jumping, mini-dh or general riding in the woods. On the other hand, when an air shock is on, I can ride XC. The best part is that it pedals well, the rear shock barely moves when pedalling yet is very active in rough terrain.

Highly recommended bikes.

The CanCan is a beefed up One isn't it? Thanks for the report, appreciated 🙂

just had a peek at canfields website - looks like the cancan is beefed-up sauce i.e.5-6" travel, and can-diggle is a beefed up 'the one' (7-8" travel).

Also noticed that they have old (03) iscg mounts, not 05 - I'm not sure, but I thought hammerschmidt was 05 only...? worth checking anyway.

I have a the one.
Great bike and lot of fun.
It pedals really well uphill and descends better than my lasted bikes: enduro frame (the one which looks like the sx-trail) and mongoose black diamond.
You can easily build a sub 14.5kg bike.
A small frame with maxle rear end just weight 2.96 kg.

Still umming and ahhing about this frame... it's really a choice between the One or an Ibis Mojo HD (BIG difference in price, £2100 for the Ibis vs £1165 for the Canfield, with the Canfield including an Acros headset and the frame preparation + fitting of my Hammerschmidt...) I think I'm leaning towards the Canfield, mainly because of it's versatility (and the massive difference in pricing of course 😆 )

Any other thoughts from the good folk of STW? Any other owners out there?

I would go for the Canfield, the price alone is a no brainer!

Do you still plan to run Hammerschmidt?

if I go with the Canfield, then yes 🙂 no can do with the Ibis though...

btw Si... bit cheeky perhaps (is it?) but could you let me know if you could supply a fork? would be looking for either a Talas 36 RC2 or Float 36 RC2, not sure which! Or... maybe a Lyric 2-step?

Not bought a Canfield frame, but bought some pedals direct from them, and they were very good to deal with.
Had a bit of a paypal issue (payment got lost) and got a free tshirt for my trouble.

Don't know what the Canfield is like, but my experience of long travel "floating pivot" bikes is that they don't pedal anywhere near as well in the Granny ring as they do in the middle or big ring.

I love my Reign X, but it's got a granny gear on it purely as a bail out, it spends 95% of its time in the middle (outer of 2 for me) ring, in which it pedals sublimely, but you can really notice it stiffen up lots under pedalling in the granny.

A guy on MTBR somewhere fitted a Hammerschmidt to his Reign X, said it wasn't to be recommended.

Whilst I love the Hammerschmidt principle, personally I think it's limited in its appeal due to the granny gear sized ring (maybe they should have a 1:1 and 0.65:1 underdrive ratio on a 36T ring perhaps instead?) making it pedal badly on many full sus designs. For hardtails it's great, but full sussers, you're pretty much limited to decent 4 bar bikes like Specialized and Lapierre, and low pivot single pivot bikes like Cannondale Prophets etc. IMO

Canfields spiel on their 'parallel link' system suggests it's fine in the granny? Though marketing is marketing after all, to be taken with a grain of salt occasionally 😆

There's a good video of the bikes in action on [url=

Tube, looks very planted, going up or down! 8)

Just read their spiel and watched that video.

Impressive stuff! Would like to try one to find out for myself, but looking at the clip of the guy climbing on one with a Hammerschmidt, I'd be inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Me likes!

Me also wants a Nimble 9 quite badly! 😛

I think I'm going to give them a go... the price is pretty good, just need to confirm a few things with the Euro distributer...

If I buy a frame from Germany (where they're based) I won't get hit with VAT when I get it here in the UK will I?

No VAT if you buy from Germany. I 'may' have some news on the UK distribution front for Canfield in the near future.....

psychle, I have a few sets of both TALAS and Float 36, both RC2, £570 for the Floats and £625 for TALAS 🙂

Forks are 2010 FIT version, though i wont have many at those prices, just clearing a bit of stock at a slow time of year.

Those prices for The One will be hard to beat, do it while you can 🙂

I would go with the straight Float, that beast needs no travel adjust 😉

Just spoke with Lance at Canfield, the new 2011 The One sounds awesome!

don't say that! 🙁 between the upcoming/updated 2011 frame and the new fork coating for Fox in 2011, I get the feeling I'm buying 'old tech'! still, £1735 frame/shock/fork/headset is pretty decent I guess? 🙂

These bikes look great...I was thinking of a Reign X, but a "the one" or can" can look great as a replacement for my '05 SX Trail..

Can Can is about to be no more so be quick if you want one. The new The One is to replace all the other frames bar the Jedi and promises to be very interesting.

psychle, £1700 for that level of kit is outstanding, go for it!
