recently fitted one of these, and sawed a slot into the crown race to ease swapping of forks.
I can't get it adjusted properly. Tried 2 different forks. To remove all play requires extreme overtightening.
Any thoughts?

Yes. The cut crown race could be "splaying" a bit as the headset is adjusted. Get another, but don't cut it!

I usually saw almost all the way through - achieves the desired result without side effects 🙂

Hmmm, reckon it's the crown race.
I know you know bikes so I'm sure your steerer tube is the right length and you know how to a install a headset.
But my S8 is great, no play with only the normal amount of pre-tension, I didn't chop the crown race.
