Never wear a pair of speedo's if the the "S" has worn off. Nothing to do with this thread but the photo of SB in those shorts and the last post made me think of it.

Ti29er - Have I missed something? Theres damn all ice in that photo. You'd be pretty daft to try cycling on that? But maybe it a question of tyres?

The canal is not as frozen as you might think.
In places here it is, then it's not 300m away, then frozen again.
Don't assume a thing.
I believed the canal was frozen solid. I was wrong.
Thank fully I had no desire to ride or walk on it to test the depth of ice.

The BBC Link:
Simon, no doubting it.
What possessed 4 brothers to do that?
I wonder if they'd "just got off the boat" and had no clue of what they were doing.
Or were daring each other.
Or were drunk. (Didn't a spectator at the Darts competition perish in a lake this week also)
Or were slightly simple.

yes, 100m away the surface was free water, under the bridge where it rarely freezes. I didn't think it was frozen solid, as I'm sure that would take weeks, and it only froze over last Friday...

Please don't fall through the ice this weekend...I am on call and will not be pleased if I have to get out of my nice warm bed at 2am because some **** has fallen through the ice and drown.

so we shouldn't take any risks in case we disturb your slumber ? Perhaps you'd be better suited to being as estate agent?

Again with the photos of schoolgirls.

(hopefully frozen Sow How Tarn near Cartmel Fell)

I think the thought that I might plunge through at any second increased my enjoyment, though oddly none of the others would have a go...

I may not be that easy to kill ๐Ÿ™‚ It took great self control not to ride right across - or was it that I lacked the nerve ? I so wanted to!

no, I always wear shorts, so they are not a reliable temperature indicator...

Seriously that could be really dangerous imo.

the more people tell me not to do a thing the more I want to ๐Ÿ™‚

Since it's warmed up, Simon, you are NOT, I repeat NOT to go out on the ice-covered canal. And for goodness sake, but some clothes on!

(stands back and awaits the inevitable)

I remember as a child, there was a tarn near Kendal somewhere that froze up every year, and loads of people went ice skating. Were we all engaging in reckless folly?

The ice was 5 inches thick at the very edge of the canal near us, and still around 2 inches under the bridges. Easily thick enough for around 5 people to jump up and down on it the same place without a hint of movement. It took a huge section of tree and a lot of effort to get through ๐Ÿ˜€

Well I wouldn't put my life at risk going to help any one who's stupid enough to risk walking on ice no matter if it was on a canal or a lake should it break on them.

It really is stupid, the lake near us was frozen solid the other weekend, how solid you'd never know but there were some skiddy footprints on it so a few numbnuts had walked on it at some point.

I've ridden snow mobiles over ice. And a dog sled. And a 4x4. And... I've walked over it. I'm not dead.

I did fall through the ice near Cheers in Boston. That was funny. I was right next to the bank. My two friend in the middle of the lake tried to levitate back.

After reading this thread I went out and rode across a frozen pond today.

OK it was only about 25 foot across but it was fun none the less.

And it started to crack about 5 foot from the other side.

That was really close I almost got my feet wet. ๐Ÿ˜€
