None at all. Not a sausage. Not even a sliver of a spacer, top or bottom.

Or will I catch fire and die?

Alu steerer you'll be fine on carbon most manufacturers are now saying a 5mm spacer [i]above and below[/i] the stem.

I thought it was a silly question, but then I thought "what the hell?" and asked anyway.

Hurrah.

None of this fancy carbon lark, apart from the spacers I'm removing!

flat stems look good on horiz-top tube bikes only IMO.
