First test run of my new "Gardline" garden feature went rather wrong yesterday afternoon.
Pride injured. Bike dented when it took all my weight just in front of the bottom bracket.
I've never damaged an alloy frame before so not quite sure what to make of it.
It feels normal riding around and I can't see any signs of other issues. Should I carry on regardless?
Carry on riding...
(Can you make me the beneficiary of your will?) 😀
@vlad_the_invader - i've put you down for my collection of Carry On DVDs 🤣
That's a sticker. You can see the edges innit.
I dented an alloy frame and continued to ride it
Then multiple small cracks started to appear in the paint round the dent. I got worried and replaced the frame.
That's a pretty massive dent. Must have been some force. If you are riding that hard and the frame gives way, how long would it take your face to heal?
That would worry me a bit if doing anything serious, would probably be ok for XC bumbling. Looks like an excuse for a new bike
Hmmm. It is supposed to be my race bike.
I'm generally pretty dismissive of some of the damage that members on here obsess over, but I'd be retiring that to pub bike duties.
strip the paint around the area and monitor it for cracking... IMHO
New frame time
I'm pretty pissed off because looking at the drop I built there's an easy way to build a down ramp that means we can roll or jump safely. Might well be a costly mistake.
+1 for stripping the paint around the area and checking often for cracks, but carrying on riding. It's not carbon, it's not going to shatter into pieces all of a sudden.
(Disclaimer, no liability, etc etc)
Can we have a pic of the feature(s)? 🙂
I would carry on riding it, dent is not next to a weld joint so unlikely to turn in to a crack.
I would however check it was still straight and the shock wasn't miss aligned in the mountings.
+1 for stripping the paint around the area and checking often for cracks, but carrying on riding. It's not carbon, it's not going to shatter into pieces all of a sudden.
The concern isn't about it cracking or shattering, it's whether it will bend or fold on another big impact.
Drill a hole on the opposite side and knock it back in to shape. Then put an appropriate sized sticker over the hole you just made. Problem solved. Potential new problem created.
I would be contacting the manufacturer to see if they do crash replacement or similar. Failing that, you may as well ride it (with frequent checks) because you're not going to be able to sell it... (Disclaimer, no liability, etc etc)
We need pictures of the 'gardline' feature to assess along with video footage of a recreation of the event.
Just ride it. It's on the outside of the curve on the end of a tube, therefore pretty much a non-critical area and the tube section is massive. It's 60 odd mm across if the BB width is anything to go by. If it were at the head tube I'd be worried but down there what's the failure mode look like? It's doesn't sound like you're riding rampage so I'd not worry myself.
If the aesthetics bother you then it's new frame time but I'd ride that for years without a 2nd thought otherwise.
If it were carbon it'd be scrap - obvs.
I’m in the scrap it camp. Plenty of cheap frames around new or second hand to not bother risking something horrible.
Well I'm still undecided.
Maybe that's the brain of a person that does this kind of thing in the first place...
This is what it looked like. Went way too slow as I was probably worried about overshooting.
I am always worried about buckling my rear wheel on that sort of jump, at least that didn't happen in your case 😉 See what I did there...
I'd scrap the frame if it were me.
I wouldn't be riding that for anything more than a XC pootle. And even then I'd be wary of going over a certain speed.
Yeah, that's ****ed. Good effort, that's a decent garden setup. IME with that being the mechanism of injury that's taken a proper whack.
Perfectly valid excuse for a replacement!
Well I'm testing it out tomorrow 😬
In the meantime have been eyeing up frame options.
Your jungle needs mowing
And even then I'd be wary of going over a certain speed.
What exact certain speed? I'll be sure to monitor 😂
What exact certain speed?
The speed that breaks it, of course... 😉
The only “certain speed” the OP needs to worry about is “a bit faster “ next time he’s heading towards a jump!!
If that was mine I'd remove the paint then fill in the dent with chemical metal. Sand it smooth then get a carbon repair kit and wrap the whole area in carbon/resin. Properly done it'll be stronger than the original.
But then my idea of a massive jump is about 30cm, so my solution might not be the best for you...
Won't Ibis give you a crash replacement at a discount? If they still have any V2s I guess?
Good effort tho. Bet the landing was a bit harsh!
Oof, that's a big old dent!
Nothing to lose in stripping the paint and seeing if there are any visible cracks, then take it for a bimble and see how it rides. I agree with the comment about effect on frame alignment.
But the real question is : Did you ride it out?
Yeah, no yeah.
Clearly need to increase the angle of the takeoff so you can clear the gap.
What lives in the enclosure with the chickenwire? Something that will eat your remains if you crash again and knock yourself out?
Your jungle needs mowing
I have garden envy looking out at the muddy clay mess that is my back garden - is that the uk with those palms?
Nah, @reeksy is in Australia
Lack of speed was definitely the issue. I didn't exactly ride it out...but went OTB with a faceplant into the wet clay.
The drop is off our driveway. There's not much of a run in. It lands in a former nursery enclosure that was used to propagate many of the local Aristolochia praevenosa vine which arguably ensured the survival of a vulnerable butterfly species.
Then there's a "road gap" onto a long run in to a table top.
Note to frame designers, stop designing downtubes with 7 or 8 inch of horizontal section sprouting from the bb shell, it's asking for damage, back in the day a bash guard or the chainring would've took the brunt of that instead of the frame, but that frames been missing a protector for quite some time by the look of it, not that it would've helped that much.
Well, I went for a thrash today. Rode a mild 2 min 30 downhill track three times, multiple drops, jumps a rock garden and a g-out. Some other tracks including a really fast spoke pinging g-out through a rocky (dry) creek.
Bike felt great. No sign of any changes. I guess I'll just keep an eye on it.
Ripmo AF V1 didn't have a frame guard in that spot.
I wouldn't give that a second thought.
There are no creases, and the rest of the frame holds it in shape so its hardly like its going to fold because you are going to fast 🤣
Its like people are viewing in isolation. If it was at the steerer end i might be worried about a snap. But that dent just improved clearance.
"work hardening"
Its pretty severe, but as its not my face on the line im gonna go with thatll probably never amount to anything.
what the mode of failiure here? If it does "go", how does it go? and could you ride it out?
It might be red, but Its not going to explode in a fireball
i doubt it would "rip in half" in one go, if a crack develops youd notice it i suspect.
might bend out of alignment and end up riding wonky?
