[Closed] Buying helmets online

So, I need to get a new lid. I’m returning to MTB from the dark side and the main reason is as a result of an operation I’ve had on my skull 💀.

My roadbike lid doesn’t really cover my scar, so it’s not really ideal!

And it doesn’t have a nice visor 😜

I can wait until after lockdown 2 ends, but my big problem is that I’d like to try a new lid on before I buy it - both for fit, and to see how it covers my scar (and to check it’s ok with my glasses).

I’m looking at giro as I had one long ago and it’s the best fit for my head - but so long ago I can’t remember the size.

Ideally I’d like to try onna chronicle or a montano to see what they are like regards my scar and glasses, if not good enough then maybe a tyrant.

Trouble is no one seems to have any of these kind of lids in stock and I’m a bit sceptical about buying a helmet online - as you don’t know what might have happened to it in delivery.

Any thoughts people? Do giro sizes run true between different models and price points (then I can try a mate’s helmet on)? Is measuring your head that reliable?

Any input welcome.

unless the packaging is crushed, the answer is nothing that will have affected it.

Giro large Montaro mips fits as well as the new Manifest Large.

My head measures the in the size range for a large.

If you're anywhere near Twickenham, I have a montaro with a dent in it you can try on for size.

I don't think Giro fit the way they used to say 10 years ago. Around that time Giro fit me perfectly, now nowhere near.

Wiggle / Chain Reaction etc. Keep labels and packaging. Try on. If it doesn't fit then send it back for free.

And I have found Giro sizing to be pretty consistent.

I bought a Carnac from Planet-X, pretty decent helmet and can't really complain for £30!

At least with road lids, Giro worked well for "oval" heads, I have a ~3.5 year old Savant.

I might add an On One Noggin to my next PX order, as it's the only lid they have that is labelled over 62cm.

I've had a large Carnac TT lid since the summer, it's a very tight fit front to back, but it's ok for sub 2hour rides at a minimum.

One one do an enduro lid for £19.99, I’ve had mine for six months and it’s a little minter as we say in east Lancashire

As above my approach earlier this year was to buy a few from CRC and send back all bar the one that fit. However, I'm also now looking for a normal lid (that was FF) and stock is really low so I'm minded to forget it for a month or two.

Is there a time in the year when they're likely to be better stocked, eg release of a new model year? I take the view that I want to try on quite a few to make a good decision, although that might just be my weirdly shaped head, on which most helmets won't go.

Giro seem consistent. I went from a large Hex (non-mips) to a Chronicle mips and it fits great.

Tried a Bell Sixer that fitted but snagged my glasses. Same with a Fox Speedframe. POC sizing seems bonkers. All ordered online, all sent back and refined fine.

Ok, so I’m going for a Tyrant, size L - trouble is I can’t find one anywhere in stock. 😢

Thanks for your input everyone.

Have both a montaro and a chronicle, the montaro is something i use mostly, but have to say i like the fit of the chronicle, might feel a little 'cheaper' in terms of finish, but for fit it feels better than the montaro for me.

Size wise both seem to be pretty much middle of the road across the board, so pretty much a good generic fit against competitors, as for posting, i wouldn't be too worried, the helmet you buy has probably been in the back of a couple of lorries before it has got near a shop anyway!
