Buying excess stuff .

I _had_ to do a stock up of 26" tubeless tyres a couple of years ago because stocks at the usual places here were running low of the good ones. I should also have gone for another pair of the Conti tubed that my GF has on her bike, but she's not likely to wear them out any time soon. I also regret not buying another 26" rim and a spoke set when I bought the last replacement for the Stumpy, but I am running out of storage for bikes and spares in the shed because of firewood and loose packets of house insulation.

Skydiving stuff is a different game. It's expensive, so I _HAVE TO_ think a lot before buying, but that has not stopped me from having a spare set of risers, pilot chute and d-bag for my rig, because I obviously need that all for the wingsuiting canopy I still have to buy. And the four or five suits. Shit, I had three camera suits at one point, now I only have two.

I'm bad for jackets - waterproof, windproof...I've convinced myself that the perfect jacket is out there; warm when it needs to be, lightweight and breathable when t doesn't need to be, waterproof and yet not a bin bag...Obviously it doesn't really exist, but not through want of trying. I try not to be a clothes horse, although I have to admit, I've got more cycling kit than I need, and I'm still looking at another pair of MTB trousers as the Rapha ones I bought are a bit too baggy for my taste I've decided.

Spares tend to be gathering about now for the replace everything drive train change that I do this time of year every couple of years, so the bin is full. For some reason that I've yet to work out, I bought grip-shift 12 speed, and convinced myself that I might try it...I probably won't. I need new brake rotors and then I've got to actually do the work...

We've probably got more in stock between us than CRC have left at this point.

😀

So my problem is I will do the sums and work out that 'if I sell this stuff it won't actually cost me that much'

Then fail to sell the stuff.

An now I have too much stuff, and I'm not very good at selling things.

I found a road bike in the loft I forgot I had. Put there when I ran out of garage space

I bought a sea kayak earlier this year, so accumulated so far 2x jackets, 2x paddles, 2x PFDs, a drysuit, a trolley, a lift-assist roof rack to go with various other bits of water sports kit. I also just bought a couple of £15 wetsuits in the Wiggle sale.

All bought by his wife when he drunkenly mentioned 'watersports'... 🙃

Ditto, I'm on the constant search for the perfect 'gravel' waterproof that would ideally be a breathable hardshell, fitted or stretchy enough for layering but not being baggy, and robust enough to drag through brambles and occasional shouldering of bike/slow speed falls into the mud.

And if it could be visible/contrasting enough for low light conditions whilst not showing up the mud stains too much AND tough enough for commuting with a heavy rucsac on that would also be dandy 😎

One person's excess buying can of course lead to another's 2nd hand bargains. @iainc from here has, so far, supplied me with a Garmin computer, a Carradice saddlebag, a set of Giant road wheels, umpteen 26" tyres and tubes, two sets of overshoes, nice Galibier gloves and a couple of Endura jackets. Most of this list was barely used. There's probably more that I've forgotten about. I'll never encourage him to tone down his spending, he saves me a fortune!

I have a number of pairs of gloves. Currently standing at over 30 (walking, cycling and motorcycling).  I have a problem, I think.  Also, I had a count-up of base layers the other day.  12.  Some unworn.

RF Cinch chainrings. When they had the steel ones for about £5-6 a while ago, I bought some*

Now they last 3 times longer than normal rings. So if one ring lasts 2+ years that's at least 16-18 years of rings. But I also ride other bikes with non-cinch cranksets. So I imagine they'll outlive me.

*Too many, maybe 8 😁

Aye - it's a shame @iainc is such a tubster and all his cast-offs are too big for me.

A lot of my stockpiling is a result of changing standards and the potential obsolescence of kit that I enjoy using, this is musical gear as much as cycling clutter. As time has gone on buying has been superceded by my improved ability to service stuff and good but not excessive maintenance, but it's reassuring to have some NOS tucked away in case of death by spanner. God only knows why I need so many cycling t-shirts ("jersey" sounds a wee bit too road-orientated for me) though, it's not as if they wear like shorts do and they wash & dry in no time, even in the winter.

I'm doing a reasonable job of hoovering up too much stuff from STW classifieds recently. But there's some good quality gear in my size which I wouldn't consider at retail or even sale price, but it's daft to say no.

I probably bought £1,500 worth of excess stock when building my winter £1,000 HT project. Some of the prices were so silly I reckon there is about £1,000 worth of net profit in there in the spring. Free bike hopefully, or massively subsidised at worst.
