I guess I'm not the only one but I must break the habit of buying bike stuff just because it's cheap 🙄" I'll use that when the one I'm using wears out " Recently found a pair of waterproof gloves and a saddle in a cupboard in the garage that I forgot I had 🙄Memo to self do a stock take! Go through the cupboards and the carrier bags hung up full of stuff oh don't forget the wardrobe as well 🙄

I had a new year resolution last year to attempt to reduce the “strategic tyre stockpile”… I’ve not added to it at least…

There's a chap in my street who does up town bikes and sells them on, periodically I just drop a load of stuff of with him....

Yep. I just built up a bike and I had everything in stock apart from one brake mount and it was all bought cheap or second hand. I also bought a spare BB because it was cheap and a useful spare then went to put it away in the "BBs and headsets" box and there was already 2 in there.

It does mostly work but sometimes I fail. That said I had a clear out recently and got some good money on obsolete (to me) parts. Probably even got more than I just spent at the bike jumble 🙂

I tend to buy helmets when they come up at a very good price (for example I got a TLD Stage for a ton) and try to have a spare full face and open face. Due to a spectacularly crashy 2023 I'm on my third full face this year and was forced to replace the last cheap one at short notice after only three rides...

I do similar and give my stuff to a local non-profit that does up bikes and gives or sells very cheaply to those in need. They must be riding around on bikes with some quite nice components 🙂

Same here. I have a stock of 3” 29+ tyres and I am not sure when I will use them as I am using 2.8 and 2.6 st th moment. I have a pair of rabbit hole rims I bought in excitement a May never build up. I had remembered them though but forgot about an unused Deore 12 speed crankset I’d bought cheap! I now have 4 Nukeproof bbs sitting in a drawer. It has to stop.

I lowered my credit limit on my card for this exact reason, too many bargains that can be thrown on the card to worry about later 😂

The old “For that price it’d be rude not to get it”

I was about to buy some new tights but then counted how many I already have. I think I should be selling not buying.

It’s all these Black Friday deals. I’ve just ordered another tyre that I won’t need until next year just because it’s half price..and I’ll probably forget it’s in the garage and buy another one by then.

I’m currently having a clearout of The Shed.

I was wondering why there’s a world wide shortage of Thomson 27.2mm seatposts. Apparently they were hibernating in a forgotten box. I had seven.

Hope hub end caps and headset spacers? Yep, I’m drowning in them.

But the advantage of telling The Wife that I’ve sold piles of stuff is that it came as less of a shock when I bought some new wheels. Admittedly they were an absolute bargain.

Barely used Hope RS4 hubs with Hope 20Five rims with Panaracer Gravel King tyres - £200.

The pile is getting smaller though.

If anyone finds a free hub suitable for a 1990’s Hope Ti Glide, please let me know! The one spare I really could use, and even Hope couldn’t help…

Suffering a strong case of FOMO with the CRC/wiggle situation and all the other offers flying around. I mean is this the last time we'll see such cheap prices again for many years as companies learn from the current situation!?! Panic, panic 😬

I guess I’m not the only one

With the amount of bike specific tools I have and bike parts and tyres my garage looks like a bike shop, albeit during covid, pretty bare but still a bike shop.

If a few more bike shops go under, sales might become a thing of the past and I will be thank full for my stockpiles.

The sodding PSA's on here cost me a fortune!

I tend to try to be specific in my hoarding rather than buy something just because it is reduced. That way I wait for something that I’m specifically looking for to be on offer rather than buying many similar items.

Bargain ski /snowboarding shells from TK maxx. I seem to have three.

My wife pre-buys the kids clothes for next year in this years end of season sales. I’ve now encouraged her to keep an inventory having had the eldest sail past a couple of pairs of shoes she’d forgotten about.

It pains me to pay RRP so I can't resist the bargains, I currently have a couple spare chains, chainrings, rear mechs, rear hubs, one spare cassette and freehub, a few bottom brackets, rotors, handlebars, stems, headsets, enough gear inner and outer to last a lifetime, spare forks, tyres, rims and spokes, three spare saddles because at one point I kept ruining them in crashes, although my current one has survived a full year at least, spare pedals too so I think I'm pretty much covered apart from no spare cranks or shifter.

One of my mates did this for a year and didn't have to work. She packed it in when it became demands for meetings as well as used tights

I've worked through most of mine over the last few years, and built/sold a few bikes from the spares bin. My bad habit was buying full bikes, then when it came to selling, splitting them up but only ever selling about half the parts so I was left with all sorts of parts leftover cluttering the place up "just in case".

That and a lot of the "too cheap to bother selling" stuff like low-ish end roadie rim brake wheels I've just given away to club members. There's always someone building a first CX bike for their kid or will put them on their commuter and actually use them.

Still have 3 full sets of fat tyres and no fat bikes though.......

There seems to be a really obvious happy medium here. If you see a wear and tear part you use on sale, buy it.

It's tyres at the minute.
I've bought two different sets of Gravel bike tyres recently, I've still not taken off the previous ones though.
I've gotten some new MTB tyres and thus swapped about all the pairs fitted to various bikes, and kept some still usable, removed ones.

Oh and road inner tubes since I started playing with TPU (see other thread)

There's Several mechs and shifters in the spares box again, and a couple of job lots of brake pads have been bought 'just in case'.

Some of these things will eventually be used, other stuff probably needs binning of eBaying off...

Could I just point out I was referring to bibtights? I have seen the occasional slightly dodgy looking ad for used bibs on Ebay (not mine, honest).

This is like a confessional... And thankfully I'm not alone.

4 pairs of 9 speed Dura Ace bar ends cos cheeeep. 8 XT 9 speed 11-34 cassettes cos cheep. Several pairs of various STI's (and other non Shimano combined braking and shifting levers) cos future proofing and many many tyres, wheels, ders, BB's, saddles (at least 6 new spares ATM) etc etc. It's not just bike parts, my Gore-Tex jacket count is over a dozen just now and, according to the recent thread here, it doesn't even work.

I think it's time to call a moratorium in the purchasing dept...🙄

These are the bits I've bought when on sale. Better to have spares than break / wear out something and have to wait for delivery.

I can't stop buying stuff but even worse I can't get rid of stuff. I have at least three sets of q/r forks that I haven't got a bike for not too mention loads of half worn out bits that might come in handy one day. Note To Self --- they never do.

...bits that might come in handy one day.

Every so often I clear out my toolbox or some bike part collection and find something that I kept becasue "it'll come in handy one day".

And then I look at it a year or so later and go "WHAT was I thinking?!"

Found some V-brake pads the last time I had a clearout.
The last time I had a bike with V-brakes was about 2015.

I've certainly bought tyres when they've been on sale, got a few pairs now for "next time I need them" which were all bought at discounted prices.

I get very panicky about rim brake road groupsets, I really feel I should have 1 x 105 and 1 x Ultegra just stashed away 'in case'

Instead, I have about £500 worth (RRP at least) in spare saddles, a bunch of spare chainrings (which I never seem to wear out anyway) and a whole 1x CX drivetrain spare.

Oh, and 2 Shakedry jackets 😂

Guilty myself. "spares" list includes at least 7 saddles, 6 wheelsets, a whole groupset, at least 3 handlebars and more shoes, chains, cables, mech hangers, cassettes than I can remember. I guess my excessive number of bikes means at least 3 of them could be considered spares... I need help!

When moving house, over 3 years ago, I shipped out boxes of stuff - 3 whole bikes, a couple of frames, various wheels. I was doing quite well, getting down to (only) six bikes, but working in a bike shop at the start of lockdown I got myself a new gravel bike and wheels at a really good price. I’ve got an even bigger garage here, so have also ended up with an ebike too. My road bike is still in the box I packed it in over 3 years ago…

I bought a sea kayak earlier this year, so accumulated so far 2x jackets, 2x paddles, 2x PFDs, a drysuit, a trolley, a lift-assist roof rack to go with various other bits of water sports kit. I also just bought a couple of £15 wetsuits in the Wiggle sale.

This week I have been servicing my son's commuter bike. An old 3*8 Pinnacle Lithium. Converted it to a 1*9. Replaced one wheel and both tyres. New cables and brake blocks. Mudguards fitted. The only purchase being a £23 single chainset.

Having stocks is good. All family bikes are now 9 speed which makes life simpler regarding stock.

I have a sickness when it comes to Chris King and Exposure.

Currently sat on 4 brand new pairs of hubs, several bottom brackets and headsets. I also have 2 spare sets of CK wheels. Why did I buy the hubs? WHY?!

I have 9 (NINE!) Exposure front lights which are all new/less than a year old. Why?

I don’t really try to carry spares anymore as it’s almost always a false economy for me. Chains, tyres, valves, disks and batteries are the only exception.

Nothing else has every failed catastrophically in 20y of riding and, like most of us, I do have spare BIKES! The ultimate spares pile.

If they're panic selling, it feels like the decent thing to do a little panic buying in response.

Yep, over the past year I've refocused my spares stockpile from random leftover parts to consumables that I know I'll need at some point.

Rear mechs, chains, pedals, tyres, brake pads, more tyres, shoes (MTB & road), a couple of wheelsets, certain clothing items, saddles, grips, lube, sealant and a few more tyres.

I seem to have ended up with 4 pairs of Nukeproof riding trews - 3 still in packets.
I reckoned that they would only last a season but 2 years in and the original buggers are still fine.

I tend to buy spare stuff when on sale on the basis it'll get used at same point. Someone mentioned Shakedry up there^. I have 3 Shakedry jackets - 2 spares in response to the recent announcement. Multiple spare bibs - I buy more when I know I get on with them. A couple of spare Perfetto's when they changed the design a couple of iterations ago. A spare Sportful Fiandre cos I liked it etc etc.

I haven't got 9 lamps tho, that's just stupid 🤣
