We will be in touch
Lately that is.
Got rid of my MTB, but still have enough bits except forks and brakes to build another.
I could build up a nice frame only XTC with XT gears etc, add some Exotic carbon forks and new V's and I'll have a nice XC only bike.
I was only thinking V's due to costs, and I still think they're cool on racers.
I've put an old Shimano DX V brake on the back of an old Kona I'm building, but putting a disc on the front.
I can't see this being a problem really as the back brake is only to scrub speed but I'll let you know how it goes.
Unless you're doing massive downhills v's should be fine I reckon.
i fancy a nice h/tail 29r with vee's.
nice and simple and cheap.
and when they are set up right i think they are nearly as good as discs, in the dry.
Yeah ton, I never seemed to have a problem with v's in the past, you just had to pull the levers harder in the mud.
That was when men were men you see. 😉
Never had an issue with the power, or even lever feel really, it came down to pad replacement and rim replacement costs for me, and better mud clearance was another bonus. I don't think they actually are as simple as a set of Deore disks fitted and more or less ignored till the pads go through.

I did that, had to zip tie the full length outer to the top tube though as it wasn't built to route Vs
I run V's on an old rigid MTB. They work fine.
I had modern suspension forks on it at one time so had disk up front/V out back. It was a crappy hayes sole and the V's work just as well (1996 original LX jobbies)
Just recently got my son a BMX with U brakes. Jeez they make V's feel like discs with dinner plate rotors!
Yep... plenty of power for a bike like this (and the only option of course 😆 )

Hmmm, I was riding my old hack bike with vees the other day as I had to leave it somewhere locked up and didn't want it nicked and I couldn't believe how rubbish the brakes felt after discs. OK they were only Deore Vees but they still felt very grabby and totally without modulation. I can't see any reason to replace them on a hack commuter bike but I wouldn't want any on a purpose built off road specific bike.
Just built up an uber lightweight Litech frame with modern XT vees at the weekend but keeping it for dry weather only riding & when the brakes are applied the flex on the forks (manitou R7 platinum) & the seatstays is worrying, but being a mag frame I'll only be riding it till it breaks anyway 😆 in the meatime I'm loving it & off for the ride in the sun right now 🙂
psychle, is that an ibis mojo? Can't quite read it, but that seems to be what the label says. Coulda sworn they were carbon-fibre FS things...
my bike still has V-brakes, none of this new fangled disc malarky..
psychle, bitchin mojo ! - Is that a vicious fork?
But shame on you for not using the 'handjob' ! 😉
I've got V's on my shopping bike and they stop my lardy ass loaded up shopping no problems. In fact I am quite impressed by them. Set up correctly they are Bob on.
weren't there some hydraulic v brakes at some point?
Not hydraulic v's but hydraulic brakes all the same are the Magura ones:
http://www.magura.com/en/products/rim-brakes-2011.html
Very good they are too, by all accounts.
I run Canti's, V's & discs, all of them stop me (with a little advance notice for the canti's!)
I highly rate Cane Creek Direct Curve V brakes, they are superb stoppers, especially teamed up with Avid Sl levers which give good modulation via the adjuster
Even in muddy conditions they still stop me (all 11 stone)
My mate Matt is still running V's on his old Chameleon. He did a week in the Alps on this bike a few years back. Hard Tail and V's in the Alps. Stout Lad!!!

i was using until recently, some sram v brakes that i bought in a sale for 6 quid each. (in 1997)
they stopped me just fine (22 stone)
and work much better than those awful, cheap, crap discs.
i think decent ones are more than a match for crap discs.
however, half decent discs are in a different league.
but if you're on a budget, go for it.
apart from the fact you will die.
My mono mini pissed all it's brake fluid on a ride on sat. What can you do about that mid ride? nowt. V-brakes can be fiddled with.
I only went off V's last Easter. THey are fine and I know how to get them working, so sort of miss them
I'm giving my XC bike a refurb. Can anybody recommend a set of brake pads ?
My only tip on that is metal backed cartridge type. Sorry can't remember the brand
Clarks? Fibrax? I just use cheap Jagwire from ebay

I always used Koolstop mixed compound (red/ black) and found that they lasted well and performed excellently (in the dry, and still pretty well in the wet).
I could probably do with going back to v's for a bit, would probably force me to ride a bit faster. My frame will accept a rear one as well, but would have to run a front disc.
I was a late convert to discs and ran Vs up until a couple of years back. Never really had any problems with them other than in really filthy conditions. Did a couple of really epic rides in the Lakes and Wales including some pretty full on downhills and was still in one piece. I still run them on the Roadrat. If I rustle up enough funds for a 456 build then my old Gary Fisher would be built up with a rigid fork and Vs for summer blasts. I've got a lovely set of retrotastic shiny speed dial levers which I really want to use!
Regarding pads, I've found that the Aztec metal backed cartridge pads are really good. Perhaps not as hard wearing as some other pads out there, but really effective if set up right. The cartridge replacements are pretty cheap too.
Yep, metal backed, my Aztecs lasted OK
