Apologies if this has been mentioned loads of times before. But, my old mavic cosmos wheels have given up the ghost. The price of repairing the knackered free-hub body is ridiculous and I was wondering what people's opinions of budget wheelsets were? I had been looking primarily at the Mavic Aksiums? They dont need to be light, as they are used for commuting and winter training rides so will likely get some stick.
I'd appreciate any personal experience of any road wheelsets below £180.
Thanks in advance!

Are these generally held in higher regard than the Fulcrum Racing 7's? Ive seen pair of those for 110 quid?

My askium rear broke after 6 months. Spoke pulled out of the hub under (not much) power. But aparently they have been 'strengthened' for 2010. Apart from that they were fine though.

my shimano r-550 wheels held up well, bought 2nd hand for £35 😀 used for the kind of stuff you describe, although I find that I destroy a set of rims if I commute every day over winter.

Which could be a good argument for hand built wheels, except at £100 a pop, you can afford to bin them, you'd be well over that for a set of open pro rims and 64 spokes, although arguably you could splash out on nicer hubs.

As summer wheels, if anything goes, its shimano so freehubs are cheep and any bike shop can order you a straight pull spoke to fit for a few quid, regardless of what the handbuilt brigade say :-p

maxlite no whole wheel went back to CRC/Mavic for warranty replacement

which funnily enough arrived with postie just this minute! Rear hub is now a different design.

Seems odd to go for more mavics given your recent experiences?

I'd always go shimano handbuilt for reasonable weight and availability of spares (IIRC the R550s weigh a LOT).

Planet-X model B here - very happy with them. I don't think anything else comes close for £99.

They replaced some Fulcrum Evo5s which I put on my wife's bike. The Fulcrums were nice but the PX are nicer, a tad lighter and a smidge spinnier.

IIRC the R550s weigh a LOT

everyone says that

From weightweeneis;

r550 1862g

mavic askium (2008) 1916g
both minus QR

Fulcrum 7's (2010) 1930g (claimed, so add 50-100g inline with other fulcrum wheels)

Of the budget factory wheels the shimano ones come out by far the lightest.

Are those weights claimed or actual for the planet-x wheels?

Mavic Cosmos are great wheels, if the rims are alright i'd pay for the freehub.
