Anyone riding XC or DH? Planning on doing both, with the same bike as well. Don't want to take 500 different tyres either, so will be hoping and praying its dry..
I'd take muds and hope and pray it's not dry, you'll be far more likely to be on the right tyres!
Actually most of moelfre is so hard that in 6 or so races I've done there in all conditions it's always better on dry condition tyres. Muds are too sketchy on the really quick hard bits.
The likely xc route will involve the uplift road too which is very hard. I'd go drys all the way.
I am gonna be there, doin the xc race hopefully on my mojo if the bank gets my money sorted and I get it built in time 🙂 Would have liked to do the Dh too but dont have enough money to do both and as the xc is cheaper I chose to just do it.
EDIT - And will be taking both my dry and mud tyres but hoping to just be able to run on my highrollers for ease.
I think the weather's going to be pretty good over the next couple of weeks, so it'll take a monsoon to even think about spikes!
As for XC, just grab whatever's fast rolling. If it's anything like last year it'll have no technical features whatsoever so it won't really matter. I hope I'm wrong though, you know an XC course is bad when a basic-spec Hardrock is overkill on the "descents."
Gutted, I want the more techy sections 🙁 i am faster than alot of the xc mean machines on those sections but tend to not be able to keep up going up fireroads!
Will your uni/athletic union not pay entry fees?dont have enough money to do both
Will your uni/athletic union not pay entry fees?
No unfortunately not, even though we had to pay even more to be part of the clubs this year than last, they are refusing. They seem more happy to subsidise the rugby, football and hockey teams, It isnt exactly pleasing the rest of us.
Sounds like bull to me, what does your membership cost go towards? Cycling doesn't require the cost of booking pitches/gyms/sports halls etc like rugby, and there aren't nearly as many fixtures throughout the year - this is the only mountain bike event! Fight against it! (we had to when the AU tried to put a limit on XC sport entries).
Basically it costs us £90 for the year including transport to BUCS and our weekly ride which is normally to either Innerleithen or glentress, aswell as a trip to a further trail centre once/twice a term. We also get use of the gym throughout the uni year, however it would be nice to not have to pay for entering BUCS.
Really?
That seems a bit cheeky. It costs us about £40-45 and our union kindly pays for entry and transport to BUCS (though that is literally it). We have to organise and pay for any rides we do (though that's not much of a problem, normally a few quid each in petrol).
It does seem strange though that very few unions even try and help MTB clubs, but bend over backwards for footy, rugby, American Football, etc. who are paying around the same amount. Luckily ours is one of them.
I'll see you there. Moelfre does have a rep of being a mud bath, i'll take a pair just in case but it'll have to be an absolute slop fest for me to use them
They are charging £29 for camping in a field. On top of race entry fees. Are they taking the piss?

Well, did everyone have a good weekend? some sweet pics on roots and rain of the DH and well a pretty sweet video of the carnage that happened on the XC. I was part of that carnage but still enjoyed very much. I didn't ride all that great but it was a sweet weekend anyway.
I'm guessing the hill is much steeper in real life than it looked in that video Highland?
haha, yeah it sure was. it was an interesting one, you were pretty snookered if you were following someone not totally sure about trying to go for it on the descent. Just ended up with a massive pile up!!
