[#6632579]

This wonderful machine was deposited at mine today by my brother.Bought for his wee son and given to me to sort out. 😥
I'm sure i heard my bikes quietly snigering as it entered the room.
So out with the fetteling tools and off i went.
Fist thing i notice was the smell and an eye dazzling shine.Yep you guessed it.The hole bike and i mean the whole bike was dripping in silicone spray including disc, pads the lot.Give me strength(bloody idiot). 🙂
So index,d the gears and usual tighten every thing up,bit of grease here and there.
Now for the brakes.
What the hell am i gong to do with these.Ipa'd the discs but there is now way of saving these pads as they where dripping.
Anyone got any idea where to get bloody pads for these calipers as google has failed me.If i can get pads for it it's really not worth saving as it only cost him £40 and new calipers will be more than that.
Iv'e even told him that i'll buy his son a bike rather than let him use this death trap. He's only ten and has slight problems.
Anyone got a clue where to get pads for these as it will save me about £150.LOL

You could try chucking them in the oven for an hour.

Got a photo of the pads in question? You might be able to match it up with something else., eg.

Yeah burning the oil off with oven/hob/blowtorch might be worth a try. Got a pic of the pads? Could you modify an existing pair to make fit?

BTW that bolt sticking out of the caliper looks lethal!

Freely admit my advice may be a decade or two out of date but Dunlop do make high-end plimsolls so their bikes might be great. 😀

It's so depressing seeing a POS like that. All the energy and material that's gone into creating something a bit like a bicycle. I'd spray em with alcohol, file them down a bit and torch them. Degrease the disks as well.

On one had some dirt cheap tektro cable disc calipers the other week. Have a look on there.

Edit: Or the clarks ones at crc I've used those before and theres nothing wrong with them.

And stop being a snob, some people don't care what bike they ride.

Remove the pads, and spray with automotive brake cleaner if you have some.

Do the pads match any of these?

Just stick the pads in the dishwasher; there's nothing hotter or more caustic for de-greasing.

Don't use brake cleaner. It just doesn't work. Trust me. Don't. (Unless see below)
First port of call is in the dishwasher if you have one. Pads AND discs.
Second thing to do is douse them in meths, or something else flammable like brake cleaner, and set them alight a couple of times.
This WILL work. It always does.

If the lad likes it enough to ride it, it's a good bike. Just make it safe for junior pootling.

I'm sure many kids get bought expensive 'proper' bikes chosen by knowledgeable dads that they don't actually want to ride.

BR-M355s are fan bloody tastic for £35/pair, easy reach adjust too.

Put the tyres in dishwasher too?

Hold them in the flame of a gas hob for a while. Probably not with your bare fingers.

YGM wool.
PeterPoddy.Fire is the answer to a lot of problems.
They shall be burned 😀
I really do have to make it safe as said in my first post he does have some problems and is a little bit on the slow side.
If i can't get the brakes spot on i won't release it back to my brother.
I may accidentally set fire to it and buy him a new one. 😉

Rob, fire works. 🙂
I earn my living working on bikes like that. I have to know a sure fire way of cleaning oily brakes. Fire works first time every time.

Spot on? Won't happen. Those are the ones mounted on springs are they not? If you can get "some" retardation out of them they'll be fine. 🙂
