[#3306068]

Hi,

I am staying at a rental cottage near Ankerdine Hill over the Xmas period with the inlaws. I am looking for local trails for a quick blast and/or trail centres/natural trails within an hour for a days riding. Any help much appreciated.

Thanks

Wyre forest is fairly close. Some pretty decent trails dotted around but best to go with a local who knows the best bits. Theres a chap called mounty on the bikeradar forum who showed me some and he seems to know a far bit. I mayb up for a blast around that time if i can escape for a few hours

Nick

Wyre Forest might be worth a visit ๐Ÿ˜‰

Nick, were you the rider with a beard, tats and a baby on the way? ๐Ÿ™‚

Sorry I always seem to end up riding with everybody called either 'Nick' or 'Chris' its confusing ๐Ÿ˜‰

To be honest, if you are at ankerdine you could legally hook onto the worcestershire way and make your way toward the Malverns via Storridge common. You should be able to track across from Storridge, up through whitmans hill and on via six acre wood and high wood to west malvern.

Have a look on Streetmap.co.uk as it's the only one that still has 1:25000 scale OS maps on it.

How long are you about for?

Malvern is within gobbing distance of Ankerdine, there are a couple of routes in the trail guide at the top to play with, or Back-On-Track Bikes has a couple of routes and advise on the website or in the shop at West Malvern.

I agree with lw - from Ankerdine you should be able to pretty much ride from the door. It's not the most exciting riding, but the route from there to the Malverns via the Suckley Hills is quite pleasant in it's way, and worth riding even if you don't make it as far as the Malverns. I do always get confused over what's a BW and what's a FP up there though ๐Ÿ˜‰

aha. ta.

I think ive only ridden out that way once. some interesting stuff, but as you suggest the FP/BW routing seems a bit haphazard.

Wyre Forest has some great riding although it can be a mud fest once proper winter sets in (it's been the driest i've ever known it so far this year).

We ride there most weeks and you'd be welcome to join us and we all keep riding around Xmas.

Just post up on here closer to the time and somebody will see it, Mick Arms is the chap to look out for as he knows the forest backwards.

Was in Wyre yesterday and it was noticeably wetter / muddier even since sunday. As MrTall said it has been particularly dry this year and the trails are soaking up the recent rain like mad. If you can stick to the higher ground things are still pretty fast and firm, but many routes act as gullies and carry the water down the valley sides to Dowles. The surface of a lot of the trails will cut up like mad as the water gets into the loose, dusty surfaces. If you can ride with them, get a rear crud catcher on and don't expect to drive home without a change of kit.
Spudnick ! I'm out friday a.m if you can make it ?

Thanks for the correction Stoner, Malvern's street-naming never makes sense to me, I mean Pickersleigh Road / Avenue whats-that-all-about??

Great thing about the hills is they're fairly rideable the year round. If it's damp between now and you're stay i'd avoid 6 acre wood as that does become a bog-fest, if you head out from the North Hill car parks most the trails are ok.

Red-necks / purple-rinse brigade can be a pain, but so long as you polite to them you'll be okay.

Lots of cheeky trails over Bringsty Common (accessible via a Green Lane that exits into a quiet lane by 'The Gaines', through the National Trust Woods at Lower Brockhampton, and a good climb over Bromyard Downs. Maybe not a day's ride but combine it with stops at the excellent pubs on the way (Live and Let Live on the Common, and The Royal Oak on the Downs), and the great pubs in Bromyard, (with some fabulous Christmas lights!) it all makes a great little Christmas ride!
