[#543583]

Pretty sure I broke my hand in a stupid* crash on the Goodwood xc race yesterday. People keep saying "Have you been to the doctors?" - is it really worth seeing a doctor about it? What can they do apart from stock me up with more Ibuprofen??

*high speed, spectacular tumble which not one person bloody saw!

if you really think it's broken I'd go to a+e - it's where your doctor will send you anyway.

I'd get it looked at - last thing you want is it healing wrong. My mum had to have her hand rebroken and fixed after she didn't get a break treated.

It depends. Which bone, displaced or not etc etc.

Yes its worth getting it checked over if you really think its broken - bruised, hard to move parts of it, swollen and so on

They can do quite a lot more than pain killers.

You'll probably need an Xray to work out what you've done, and possibly a cast or a splint if it's broken but straight forwardly so and not miss aligned,or screws or pins or metal plates put in,depending on what the injury is.

Cheers
Tim

Should be A&E rather than doctors surely??

Is it badly swollen? Show us a photo and we'll judge if you should go or not!

I've done it once. It wasn't really that sore but it was badly swollen. If you go to A&E you'll get a cast or slab to make sure you don't move it which means it'll heal quicker. And they'll x-ray which will determine whether they need to operate or not.

An broken hand can lead to all sorts of problems if not checked out, especially if you have the misfortune to have broken your Scaphoid.
Get it checked asap.

Not what I want to hear!
It'll be the metacarpal by my little finger if it is broken. Might have dislocated the little finger at the knuckle. But yeah it's big n swollen, briused on both sides (I've never seen a bruised palm before!) and well, agony.

Thanks for the link Tim.

DezB - I had similar last week. I came off and instantly knew my little finger was not right. Made it back to the car and had a look. Like you said, swollen and bruised with a lump top and botttom I could not bend it either. I thought about just leaving it... after all, what can they do with a broken finger that I cant (strap it to the other one and rest it etc)

Anyway, my partner told me to go to A+E and get it checked regardless which I duly did.

Result: Doctor concluded it was dislocated without the need for a xray then proceeded to pop it back in there and then... few seconds of agony, job done. Home I went and a week or so later hardly any pain at all. Had I not gone to A+E I would probably still be wondering why it still hurt and I could not bend it!

GO

Why do people jump to going to A+E, how long ago did you do it, are you suffering very much?

Walk in centre are great for minor injuries like this you get seen quicker and doesn't take up a place in A+E for those who are in need.

Ah. Just had a nosey. WICs only exist in England, and there's 93 of them.

Ah - that explains it.

Scots only go to the doctor when we are too ill to walk.

We have the minor injuries clinic at WGH and others instead

Yup WIC and MIU are practically the same, MIU probably best choice for wrist fractures many A+E have MIu next to them or jsut off the department.

Thanks chaps.

Yeah, Sunday - will have to see how it is. I thought the plaster might stabilise it a bit, but it doesn't really. Can't stay off the bike for too long ๐Ÿ™
