[Closed] Brechfa and Cwm Rhaeadr (or natural ride suggestions)
Staying near Carmarthen for half term and usually spend a bit of time at Brechfa and Cwm Rhaeadr as well as Afan.
Can anyone confirm if any of these trails are open after the storms as I’ve been seeing conflicting reports.
If they are all closed can anyone suggest any decent natural routes nearby? I’ve never ventured away from the trail centres but wouldn’t mind doing a decent xc loop or two if anyone has any suggestions.
Cheers
According to MBWales on Facebook Cwm Rhaeadr is open and Brechfa is also open - with some diversions
That’s what I saw, but NRW websites for each centre say the trails are shut. If all else fails I’ll head up to Brechfa and have a look.
I've no doubt there will be trees down in Brechfa after the storms at the end of last week (there was already a diversion on the Gorlech red) but our weekly ride isn't until Thursday this week so I can't confirm the state of things yet.
Having said that you could do a loop of Mynydd Llanllwni from Llidiad or Sifigwm and stay out of the forest altogether.
If it hadn't been so wet recently and on the basis you are willing to drive to Cwn Rhaeader you could keep going to the reservoir and do the dothrie valley loop, easy google for a route guide. It will likely be very wet in places currently though.
Limited trees to have fallen on the plus side.
I did the Dothie Valley loop a couple of years ago in a dry spell and it was pretty soggy then!
Waiting to hear if Nant y Arian trails are open, if so might just head up there for a day.
There's just been a post on the Brechfa facebook group that Cwm Rhaeadr is mostly ok with a few trees to carry over.
Top of brechfa green, plus all of blue and IIRC some/all of black are closed for maintenance for a few more weeks now, be surprised if there's not a few trees down but no-one's reported any major trouble.
Just back from Cwmrhaeder. Loads of trees down. Loads of hanging death too. The Forestry guy turned up after we had set off but before we got back to the car park. The trails are very, very, very shut. This includes Brechfa, Cwmrhaeder, Halfway and Crychan.
It probably doesn’t help but Cwmcarn is running ok if you can make it there. I rode round Twrch until the point I could cut off and ride the steeper off piste and the main official downhill and it was mostly ok. One off piste trail was blocked by trees down but I rode 3 others broadly ok.
