4 days ago i went and collected a brand new Specialized Stumpjumper Expert 29 2019 from a bike park shop.(well known bike shop in scotland) advertised on there facebook page as brand New . reduced cost .
When i got there it was ready for me . to my surprise there was a top tube invisiframe like frame protection and they stated it came like it . OK i said not heard of that before .
nice chaps (no names) as i want them to sort it for me .
yesterday my own invisframe came so i could do the whole bike as i do this with all my carbon bikes in the past .
taking it off with warm water and a hairdryer on warm settings it was peeling off very well with no residue or stickyness. When i got to the middle 2 spots of paint came off with the frame protection . I took off the rest with ease and no other problems . GUTTED !!!!
I have since messaged the shop for them to say they will email specialized .
what are you kind folks opinion on this ?
I know what my thoughts are but will keep them to myself for the time being .

That’s odd. I picked up my Spec Stumpy Expert 29er last weekend and I had no invisi-film on the top top. The only protective film on mine was on the down tube. Same colour too.
Is that touch up paint rather than the original paint .the vinyl over that would concur someone has put it on the deter the eye from it .
If it bothers you then take it back. It's a personal thing, it wouldn't bother me in the slightest but then I think invisiframing a rapidly depreciating asset designed to be abused is a waste of money.
I have mates that would be driven mad by such a chip but then they don't get my attitude either.
What could the shop do to make you happy?
I had a paint defect on my first one. The options were return it for replacement or repaint.
Got a new one.
Looks like touch up tho and they don't come with tape.
Things like this drive me mad! I remember the first time I came off my first "proper" mtb and scratched the top tube. Was livid for a week.
A couple of weeks ago, I dropped a screwdriver when dong some DIY in our living room and it bounced and hit my £400 Yamaha hifi amp, causing a 1mm mark on the brushed aluminium facia. My wife keeps telling me that it is unoticeable but I'm peeved because I know it is there.
I keep telling myself that we'll all die at some point and our inventions and toys will rust to nothing, but in the meantime those little scratches drive me mad! OCD?
how much was it reduced by? that may have been why. if it was they should have explained the reason for the reduction
OCD?
No.
I'm firmly in the f*** it, it's a mountainbike camp. Even my road bike is an abomination to roadies polished 'summer club run bike' sensibilities!
But it would annoy me on a brand new bike.
Why did you take the invisiframe off though? It's just aking work for yourself putting it back on!
Chase the shop it’s there problem and yes sticky tape can and does pull the paint off bikes
If it doesn’t come from specialized like that, the only reason they would bother to put it on is to hide damage.
I fully understand some folks opinions on a machine that’s designed to be used quite hard, but it would drive me mad.
There’s a world of difference between a chip you’ve done yourself while riding, and a chip someone else has done.
I’d want it replaced.
Probably a return, hence the "reduced cost". Should have been advertised as such.
welcome to the forum.
you take invisiframe off to put invisiframe on?
Quite a few people with Levo’s have complained about thin paint and chips.
£3000 for a current bike that's got an RRP of £5150? I'd suck it up. I'm not saying it's right if they have tried to cover it up but I'd happily touch that up, invisiframe over it and enjoy the extra 2k.
it was not actaul invisiframe and only the top tube and was not fully covered like the proper invisiframe would be . it only went up to ST on stumpjumper lettering on the top tube . it looked odd and as i have a full set to put on the new top tube piece would cover it all . also if i left on the protection i took off then i would have miss shapes .
also it was yellowing on the edges .
the message on facebook messenger also states they knew nothing about it and had never seen it before .
Guys i want to keep the bike , my problem is the shop should of told me but it seems they are playing oblivious to it so im thinking now the shop as either lied to me to cover it up . im pretty certain the bike was a ex desplay but for 3k its a bargain and i just dont want to come into problems later on .
when you feel like you have been lied to and its been covered up it just asks if there is anything else wrong with it . i will give the shop to come up with something if not i will take it up with specialzed to get me to touch up paint and then invisiframe with proper invisiframe as the protection that was on could not of been invisiframe as it was going yellow in one spot and it was a bit short to cover the whole tube .
and again the shop advertised it as brand new .. not ex desplay or ex demo . the rest of the bike looks brand new .
there is more tape on the rear brake hose exit on the none drive side chain stay and another right where the caliper is . im thinking this is factory ? due to the rub it will incure with use . if its not factory then i will question this also .
rockthreegozy
how do you know how much i paid for it ? i did not mention how much i paid.
care to explain how you know ?
Its still on their Facebook page! Looks a lovely bike (minus the flakes!))
Why would a bike shop sell a 2019 bike only 2 months into the year for £2k off the RRP?
Probably would have asked that myself.
Ex display .....in the bike trade. Pull the udderone.
It's ex demo (used)or its new.
sorry meant ER on the stumpjumper lettering the frame protection that was on it went up to .
and again it was advertised as BRAND NEW !
I'm with the op.
You get a good deal on a bike with some minor cosmetic damage? Fine, if that's the reason the price is discounted and you are aware of that reason it's all good.
You get a good price on a bike that's brand new. Also fine. If you then discover it's not quite as new as the shop said then I would be a bit peeved also.
Let's not forget here. The op paid £3k for a new bike. Not "ex demo" etc.
I wouldn't expect to get a new bike for £3k (discount is irrelevant as shop sold it as new) and it to have paint damage that's for sure.
Hopefully the shop/ specialized will sort it for you op. One way or another.

you must be a detective then lol .. as did not say who i bought it off either .. you work at the shop ? LOL
poopscoop
Thank you .. this is exaclty my point . its trust . i can never trust the shoip again if they have pulled a fast one and it does look like its been covered up . i even asked if i could take the frame protection off and they said yes its fine .
will give the shop benefit of the dougbt and to fix it as i really did think i was getting a brand new bike .

killswitch, this forum has a lot of knowledgeable people on bikes, the trade and stuff totally irrelevant to bikes.Lol
I've learnt never to be surprised by the deductive skills of the guys on here. I mean that in a good way.
This forum is *the* place to ask the most obscure advice on bikes or life in general actually.👍
Posters can be contentious or even argumentative but their heart is usually in the right place and the knowledge on here is truly remarkable.

my understanding is that these bikes have been out since last may . and the new 2020 versions will be anounced soon be it same frame but with new colours . this is the reason why i thought this is the reason for the discount and if you have ever been to a specialized concept store nobosy ever pays full RRP as there is always movement in price with specialized . i also have a Kenevo expert that i bought 6 weeks ago and got that for just 4k all be it that was an online finance purchase .
will just wait to see if the shop do anything.

thanks

Good job they didn't supply an ex demo one then.
Some shops do put a protective sticker on top tube and round head tube as these are most common points that get bashed in transit. Not usually invisiframe though.
Having just put invisible-film on my Stumpy Expert - the only factory film was on the down tube. It’s certainly an odd one. I suspect it’s a return from someone else? Do the bike show any signs of wear anywhere else - sprockets etc.. for £2k discount I’d just suck it up and worry less when I got the first rock strike
Not usually invisiframe though
OP said it wasn't invisiframe tho
it was not actaul (sp) invisiframe

Read this and my mouth fell open 😦😦😦. This whole thread is of the wall batshit mental, you guys/girls aren't mtb'ers your just weirdo shiny toy collectors. But heyho just carry on 👍👍

No signs anywhere else . there is no signs of use at all . ive inspected it with a fine tooth comb ..
but it does have some bits of frame protection where the rear brake house comes out the frame .

Nah, batsh*t crazy is failing to comprehend than another person might just possibly have a different opinion to your own. But yeah, hey ho...

At least the first scratch is already there so you don’t have to go through that whole thing where you notice it and get upset before ignoring it and the est of them for the life of the bike.
How much are second hand ones going for? Is it a mega cheap deal or just a ‘good’ one? If you could feasibly get a brand new one from a dealer elsewhere for the same price, maybe a bit naughty for them to describe as brand new if it isn’t but it could still be that and have had something dropped on it in the shop to cause a chip or two. Technically brand new just also damaged.
I’m in the ‘it’s a mtb, it’s going to get more than that if you use the thing properly’ camp anyway...
If it doesn’t come from specialized like that, the only reason they would bother to put it on is to hide damage.
No, some shops use a protective film on that area as std (as said above) to protect the bike in the shop - wide bars turned in the racking tend to hit top tubes as bikes are moved about. It's commonly used and it doesn't normally damage paint when removed so I'd blame the paint and ask the shop what they'd offer. Replace or a credit, etc.
If i were the shop owner i'd give you a full refund and send you on your way. That would teach you 🙂
Personally, i'd be fine with the marks. I'll do worse myself in the upcoming few months and i got a bargain.
I'd be peeved. I totally get that a mountain bike is eventially going to accumulate a lot of battle scars if it's used properly, Invisiframe or not. But if you have paid for a new bike, part of the fun is enjoying owning and cooing over a pristine bike, even though you know it won't stay like that.
If it's "ex demo", "nearly new", "slightly marked in transit" or whatever, that's fine, as long as the shop is up front and honest about it. If it's advertised as "new", you have every right to expect it to be perfect.
If they have covered up a cosmetic defect without telling you, that raises questions about their honesty and integrity which doesn't bode well for any future interactions with them.
I agree with the OP. it kind of takes the shine off a new bike purchase.
your not likely to get any further discount than you already have. when i needed a replacement the expert frame colour was on months back order!
Askt he shop what they would like to do.
in your position id keep the bike due to the deal you got. or deal direct with specialized.
Poor form by the shop if it was touched up and sold on as new. I get the remarks about how it'll get chipped/scraped in use but the OP bought protective film for it and obviously would like to keep his £3K purchase in decent condition.
