I had new Shimano XTR brakes fitted to my 08 Epic a few months back and whilst the pads seem good I seem to have lost pressure on my rear.

I haven't fiddled with them, there seems no obvious reason, so wonder if anyone has any thoughts before I take it back t'shop.....which I have no time to do!

they might have a leak somewhere or werent properly bled the first time around and now have air in the system.
a quick fix would be to push the pads/pistons back into the caliper and then pull the lever in as far to the bar as possible to lock the brake. then tie a zip tie around the bar and lever with the brake locked and leave it overnight. this should force any air in the system back up into the reservoir.
at the same time from time to time inspect the caliper, lever and all the connections for any evidence of leaks/seepage. if you suspect you might have a leak you may want to cover your rotor with something to prevent contamination
if all else fails then they will need to go back to shimano/madison for warranty work...but you can take as much time to do this as you want as all xtr kit is covered by a 3 year warranty

Have you bled them?

I get this sometimes with shimano brakes, again for no reason. I normally solve it by taking the wheels off and pumping the lever a few times (with care) to push the pistons out a bit. I then put the wheels back on and have a lovely firm lever.

Do they have a reach adjustment screw? I thought my Clarke skeletal system had eaten a rear set of pads but thankfully realised before I lost it that the grub screw adjusting reach had fully unwound giving pull much closer to the bars.......wound it all the way back in with some thread lock and hey bingo, no more soft brake feeling. I very often think this is the issue with folks brakes more than needing bleeding.....I can genuinely say in 20 years of mtbing I've only ever bled two brakes.....both Hayes which had the fluid well and truly boiled and ended up with destroyed phenolic Pistons/seals.
