easy guys
brought a fisher big sur with avid elixir 5 brakes fitted and having rode it twice in the snow/slush/rain the brakes absolutely squeal like hell really loud and noisy has anyone else had experience of this please or any ideas for sorting it??
cheers
Difficult one. I think it needs a dry ride with a few good downhills thrown in. I run juicy 7's and 5's and they both squeal a bit in the damp but a good burn seems to sort them. I assume they have not been contaminated with anything? If so, put the pads in the oven at 200 for ten minutes or so.
Have a search on here - there has been recent discussion.
Some brakes do this more than others, contaminated / glazed pads make it worse.
things to try -
sand the pads and rebed them
Tiny amount of copaslip on the back of the pads
face the brake mounts if is mount.
file a chamfer on the leading edge of the pad.
Centre the pads properly as in the hope vid.
Spray disc with wd 40>
One of these may stop your brakes from working but will definatly stop the squeal
as above, also:
use meths on the pads and rotors to eliminate grease
Use blow torch on pads to eliminate grease (so they are glowing a little)
Try them on another bike
Sell them and get another brake
most brakes tends to squeal abit in the wet/muddy/snowy conditions, ive not come across any that are silent throughout a wet ride....see how they fair on a dry day before putting the nail in the coffin on them....i get a bit of squeal from my front brake only in the wet/snow/muddy conditions, but soon as i brake harshly it burns off and the noise goes till they get wet/damp/snowy/muddy again...unfortunately its pretty much part and parcel of brakes in the wet....all of the above are worth a try but to be honest your pads and brakes and rotors are probably fine, its just the wet ๐
