[#1124625]

On one bike (the one that I use all the time) I'm using Hope M4s with braided hoses and floating discs and I'm very happy with them. On the other bike (built to do the Megavalanche) I've got Avid Elixir Rs fitted with 203mm rotors front and rear. Both will be re-bled as they feel spongy but I'm wondering if it's worth changing the rotors to a set of hopes and fitting braided lines? Does anyone have any experiences of the two systems?

Just wondering before I hand my present list over to the Wife.

Cheers,

Dan

No, just get them bled properly. What difference do you think hope rotors are going to make?

Well, forums being dangerous at times I had read that the Hope floating discs performed better i.e. better feel, heat dissipation that kind of thing and were also less prone to warping. I have noticed that the floating rotors have never needed truing whereas previous non floating rotors I have used have.

Agree about the bleeding, the Avids are shocking out of the box!

Floating rotors will be less likely to warp if overheated ( but I have never warped a disc despite having blued a few) Other claims to improvement - huge pinch of salt required

+1. Don't see how changing the rotors would make any difference

I'm sure my XTR pads last longer using Hope rotors, but I think its more to do with the larger holes in the rotor clearing grit from the pad surface quicker than the Shimano's I had previously, I notice the latest XTR rotors have gone for larger holes (sadly not an option for me as they don't do 6 bolt).

Goodridge Hoses will make your brakes feel less spongey. I cant say why exactly, its just a science fact

Goodridge hoses should improve power in theory, as the hose is stronger so the force from the lever is more efficiently transferred to the caliper, not waster expanding the hose. As for rotors, I doubt there is much in it unless you get some of hope's vented rotors that come with their big brake (the Moto I think).

Mr Wormhole, I'll be sure to offer them to you first if I do decide to swap.

Thanks for the advice folks!

Has anybody actually fitted braided lines to Avid Elixir Rs then? There is no kit available until mid Jan according to CRC.

Alternatively run Shimanos as everyone who has Avids either complains about them or fettles all the time, and theyre a pig to fettle too

Simple solution sought

if anything the floating rotors are worse. i have them on my bike and they work fine great and dandy. but the amount coming through the shop that have duff riveting is quite high. we have even spoken to hope about it cos some are really off. changing to a braided hose will make the biggest difference. just get another set of m4s
