[#4724525]

ok I bought an all carbon fork (carbon steerer too)

got a good deal as the steerer had been cut.

I forgot about the headset when measuring the stack.

with no spacers I have around 5-6mm gap from the top of the steerer to the top of the stem.

will it pinch and break the top of my steerer?

Probably be alright but manufactures like Thomson say 3mm max. Maybe source a low stack stem...some FSA stems are 35mm instead of the more common 40mm. Ragley do a low stack stem as well.

Also the cb headsets are around 21mm so they will probably get you quite a bit of steerer tube back.

current headset has a 35mm stack - the CB headset has a 21mm stack

this should sort it (as I didnt want a gap from the top of the steerer to the top of the stem - as its all carbon..i can add a 3mm spacer ontop of the stem

FWIW I'd go down the stem changing route or find another low-stack headset rather than a CB headset...had one and the bearings went rough quickly and surface rust formed on it; have a search on here as I'm sure others have said the same.

i think if I get a headset with a 21mm stack the top of my stem will be exactly level with the top of my steerer.

as it's a carbon steerer I will have a headset adjuster inside the steerer (like this http://www.xcracer.com/shop/viewproduct.php?productid=190)

hopefully with this inside it will be impossible to 'pinch/crack' the top of the steerer.

could I then just add a 3mm spacer on top of the stem (to enable the topcap to create enough pressure to lock everything down nice)?

The CB headset is just fine - get the stainless steel version.

On One CNC stems are 35mm stack plus they're swish and cheap.

That's for a 44mm headtube and yours looks like a 34mm headtube, I don't think you can get zerostack headsets for 34mm headtubes.

Trek (and others) say their fork warranties on road bike forks are void if you don;t run a 5mm spacer on top of the stem so that all of the stem is on the steerer tube. Specifically to stop the steerer tube being crushed at the top by the pinch bolts on the stem.
