I’m interested in the ‘Line Pro 30’s’ (same as the model reviewed in issue 116), but am a bit apprehensive about carbon rims with bead hooks.  I know the ST reviewer didn’t have any problems, but the Bikeradar review mentions 3 rims failing....albeit with 2 cracked by ‘rimdinger’ at BPW.

Just wondered if anyone on here has direct experience of Bontrager carbon rims - if you do, could you let me know what you think to them please.

FWIW, I’m probably about 86kg in full kit, and mainly ride Dark Peak and English-Scottish trail centre reds, with occasional mincing down ‘enduro’ trails at Innerleithen:)

You do get a warranty on bonty carbon rims. If you damage one, even if you have crashed they will replace it free of charge .

My mate has had his fail twice, both times split

Warranty replacement has been good both times, but still....

My missus has a set on her Marin. She's 5'2" and about 8.5 stone, but she's been known to batter wheels!

Rocky descents are her favourite too and she's not managed to kill these yet. If you fancy them and the price is right, just go for it 🙂

I had the Bontrager wheels after the wheel test in Singletrack and used them on my own trail bike (I'm a similar riding weight to you) - and I've managed to break the rear wheel (still held air, but it was cracked/compromised...) after a weekend of riding at CyB. I've just had it replaced under warranty so we'll see how this one goes. Unlike some folks at STW 😉 I'm not known for breaking stuff, so this was a surprise...

Hmm...interesting - thanks for the feedback.  At the risk of tempting fate, I’m not a gear destroyer, but the mixed experiences reflect what I’ve heard about them from others so far.  I can get some for a cracking price (...ahem) and have been told the warranty is really good, but I guess it'd be a proper PIA if one broke whilst on one of my trips away.

A friends partner runs the Bonty’s with inserts, but to me, this defeats the point of having a nice light rim. I’d really prefer a wheelset that doesn’t require big foam hoops in them - looks like I’d better keep saving!
