I'm following the instructions on the Park Tools site but lever just keeps pumping endlessly, no stiffness at the lever. And no air bubbles appearing and fluid level in reservoir not falling. Any idea what to do?
It says keep pumping the lever several times but how many times is this? When I bleed Hope brakes it takes a lot of cycles to complete the bleed but not so sure aboutthe big S. Any tips gratefully received ta...
are you bleeding from new? there might be trapped air in the caliper.if so give the lever a few pumps then hold it on whilst you undo the bleed nipple to let air out the caliper.but lock the nipple up before the lever touches the bars, do this a cupple of times.make sure theres enough fluid in the lever reservoir.does that make sense?
Tap the hose and caliper to get the bubbles through.
BTW, I find Shimano's own instructions work just fine (and why wouldn't they!).

Try bleeding them from the caliper by using a syringe to push fluid up to the lever reservoir.

I second that. The Shimano method works perfectly, but an Avid-style bleed is much more effective.
Follow the Simano instructions to the letter and maybe repeat. If that doesn't work do an Avid-style with a syringe on the caliper:
1. Place an elastic band on the lever to lock it against the bar and isolate the system.
2. 1/2 fill the syringe with oil, place on the nipple with tubing.
3. Pull the plunger back to remove as much air as possible (this also pulls dissolved air from the oil
4. Remove the elastic band and push the oil in the syringe into the caliper (leave the syringe 1/4 full)
5. pump the system several times, top up the reservoir if nessecary and then if it still isn't ideal repeal the shimano method.
If they're 2nd hand, you might have dirt in the caliper, caused by previous owner doing the bleeding up method, and pushing dirt into the caliper from the bleed nipple. Not necessarily, it was just the source of my problem, so I'm passing on the experience.
