[Closed] Bleeding M988 brakes?

So have ordered a new pair of M988 XTR trail discs. Seeing as i figured there's a strong possibility i'll have to shorten the hoses anyway decided to go cheapo & save myself €50 by buying them with the brake levers the wrong way round.

With this in mind at a bare minimum I'm going to have to swap the hoses over when i get them & probably bleed them too. So has anyone on here had to bleed a set yet? How do they compare to regular shimano hydraulics? And secondly & possibly more importantly will i need anything special to bleed them? I'm thinking the little bucket thing for the reservoir I've seen on the shimano technical docs but don't know whether or not that'll come with them as standard. Anyone able to shed some light? Mister P perhaps?

Bucket/plunger you describe is needed.

Doesn't come with UK stock - don't know whether it'll come with yours.

RRP is about £3-4 though so not a biggie.

I did the same. Before disconnecting at the lever end I pushed the pistons out a little. After reconnection I put the bleed bucket thing on, pushed the pistons back in and topped up the bucket reservoir. I had managed to get some air in there so I the did the old school squeeze lever repeatedly (with bleed block in caliper) and tap hose / lever while squeezing.

Miles easier to make sure there was no air than my older xtr levers. In fact it's truly easy peasy with these. Just get the shimano bleed bucket thing....

i've done a 'ghetto' bleed without the bucket...

just keep pushing the fluid into the calliper with a big syringe full of fluid.

some of it will dribble on the floor.

i was as surprised as anyone to discover that it had worked.

(i was helping a friend - after i confidently told him that i was happy to bleed shimano brakes, and then he turned up with the XTR's...)
