[#2333407]

getting a bit more ray mears after each bivi trip and am looking to hone my firelighting skills so i can ditch my clipper in favour of my firesteel.

I've been testing with cotton wool as tinder which seems to be pretty good but does anyone use anything better, i've seen maya wood/dust but never used it?

ta

Try the lint/fluff that collects in the tumble dryer.

cotton wool smeared in vaseline. Pull apart when you want to use, the fluff stuff catches fast and the vaseline burns for a long time.

You can't beat a tampon. Pull it apart and watch it go up. I just use a flint stick and its away.

I thought that wire wool worked well until I tried it at (I'm a Craft and Design teacher) school and it didn't work - may have been too coarse though.

Sounds like a Tampon smeared in Vaseline would go off like a flare then. I guess Mrs hh would go off like a flare too if she saw me smearing one of hers in Vaseline and didn't accept my reason for doing so.
