Because the real danger on roads doesn't come from untrained cyclists.

A danger does come from bad cyclists, like it or not.

I think the thing with insisting ion training or cyclists [ it does make some sense to be fair] is to suggest that the MAIN problem/danger is a result of unskilled cyclists wilful hurtling themselves into the safely driven and courteous car/motor vehicle drivers who are trying their best to avoid them.

A quick blast on a road should allow anyone to understand why this is BS.

Yes better trained cyclist will help but not half a much as better trained/courteous drivers [ or enforcement of the laws particularly when death results]because they are the ones who do most harm.

Assuming it was always the drivers fault when they hit a cyclist [ like when you run into the back of someone] would help us far more than a safety course.

Some cyclists are dangerous as are some car drivers but I suspect they all know this anyway so I am not sure what difference education will make tbh.
I am sure even a RLJ relaises it is more dangerous than not doing it for example as does a speeding car driver

I think the danger from cyclists is minute compared to that from motorists, but yet it does exist, and probably amplifies the motorist danger (reactions to dodgy cycle manouvres etc).

I have nothing against free cycle training available to all. But mandatory would basically be the beginning of the end of the right to the public roads.

I suppose you have to say Fairplay to BikeRadar: http://www.bikeradar.com/news/article/sharetheroaduk-bikeradars-response-35028/

Maybe read what you're signing up for properly next time.

While we agreed to take part in the debate about cycle safety, we [s]don't advocate compulsory testing before cyclists are allowed on the roads[/s] didn't actually know what this was about and realised how pissed off our users were. That was [s]never [/s]part of the story we published, whoops! As soon as we realised [s]what had been said[/s] how many of our users were heading for the door, we asked ingenie to correct their statement and BikeRadar withdrew our support from the campaign.

FTF them.

It's miniscule. And if an idiot on a bike hits you, they get hurt too.

I happen to agree that cycle training is a good idea in the UK, not because it reduces the potential for harm to the public, but because it gives people the confidence and the skills to ride on the road in the first place.

I've done non-compulsory advanced cycle training off my own back and would highly recommend it. I feel a lot safer on the road as I'm able to position myself and it helps you to identify danger.
It also makes you realise how dumb some other cyclists are who don't appreciate when you're trying to help them not get killed if you point out their error

That bikeradar teamed up with FIAT shows them to be nothing more than a whorish corporate entity making the right sort of sounds in the hope they can generate more income, really. Nothing more. Kind of blows any credibility they might have had away.

FIAT: if you genuinely want to improve conditions for cyclists, stop making cars please.

Most of the complaints I've heard about "bad" cyclists are usually that they're not using the Cyclecraft recommended techniques for coping with bad driving by the licensed motorists, such as using the primary road position.

I feel safe as houses (admittedly ones in Homs) on the road! It's basically common sense! A lot of riders don't help themselves either by being cocky and arrogant, or by being too timid/defensive.

Assume everyone wants to kill you and you'll be fine!

In fairness unsolicited advice is rarely welcome, especially if it takes the form of received wisdom.

Bit harsh maybe?

I don't hear anyone slagging Wiggo off for taking the Murdoch shilling.

well played Bike Radar - even if they did backtrack/ change their minds, at least they've fessed up and did something about it quickly.
I still think their forum is crap though!

That's a bit knee-jerk. Cars are part of the problem, but since they're not going to disappear from the roads overnight they need to be part of the solution (or at least the next step) too.

He'll have to stop feeling any satisfaction for all the gold medals the cycling team won - British Cycling have Fiat as one of their official suppliers...
