[Closed] Bike storage, workplace requirement

I suppose I'm thinking out loud with this one, but do employers have any obligation to provide staff with secure bike storage?

I work for a national company based out of a large office (best part of 200 employees), they participate in the cycle to work scheme.
The site has plenty space, so that isn't an issue.

I'm not aware of anyone who cycles to work at this office, and I'm reluctant to do so too - locking a bike to a fence out on the street is quite off putting.

With the push to cut out short car journeys for environmental and health benefits, and when even (for e.g.) primary schools are able to offer secure storage - surely it should also be the case in this instance? Maybe my expectations are too high...🤷🏻‍♂️

You what now?

Yes.

Having said which, go for it. My old emloyer got an Asgard tin at my suggestion, which was used a fair bit.

Some provide parking, so the current push towards more sustainable forms of travel should mean that it's natural to provide secure bicycle storage.
Whether this should made compulsory, or subsidised in some way, and the security is adequate, remains to be seen.
It does seem to be the right thing to do, though

First day I rode in and locked the bike to fence in the car park. I was told it would be probably be nicked by the end of the day. Bike was out of sight of the road, and it’s a pretty residential area... Wasn’t nicked, but now it lives in the server room when I ride in.

Why not speak to other people and see if they would ride to work if there were more secure parking for bikes?

Then as a group you could talk to HR and say we want to ride to work to help cut down on car journeys and help keep fit etc.. can the company supply some secure bike storage

As your a national company do you chat to other employees at different sites? if so ask them if they have any bike parking at their site that way you can say to HR that bike parking is provided at other sites the company own

Im very lucky as my companies two sites i visit (13 miles apart) both have secure bike parking and shower rooms

There's no requirement, but any national organisation that doesn't take the opportunity - space permitting- to show that they are supportive of having a healthier workforce, fewer sick days, and helping reduce carbon emissions is really missing a trick for some blatant self promotion.

The fundraiser at my workplace is applying for grants to make it more bike friendly. Maybe you could hunt around and see if there's anything that would be available for your work.

How big is the site? Nothing g 'official'at mine but it lives in the disused corridor behind my office, means I can leave a nice one there and not worry at all. Must some dead space somewhere in the building?
