off to the peak tomorrow with the missus and she needs a bike for the day. any suggestions for rentals? just going to go round Derwent and howden res.

There are hire bikes available at the Fairholmes cafe at the top of Ladybower. No idea if they're any good though.
Fairholmes hire will do you fine for going round the res. The hire is primarily focused at recreational cycling so the bikes are of a spec for that rather than mountain biking.
I think Bike Garage in Bamford is hires bike for mountain biking. If you plan anything more than a pootle you might want to try them. Its located in the Garden Centre at Bamford might do bike that will stand being ridden off road. From Hathersage head towards Hope and Castleton. Keep straight on at Sickleholme services / T-junction with traffic lights. Follow road round and over river bridge then take the second right into the garden centre. Follow the one way system round and you'll find the place.
If you havent done it Monsal trail is also worth a trip along.
