[Closed] Bike commute - road/off-road ratio?

Being a bit of a sad b@stard, I've worked out (to quite a considerable number of decimal places...) the proportion of road to off-road riding on my commute.

Total distance: 22km
Road: 4km
Off-road: 18km

Ratio: 18:72

I've not perfected it yet and I've got a bit more exploring to do but I'm convinced I can tip the balance even further away from tarmac. Tuesday's ride home found a whole swathe of new stuff, even if one bit included a push across a ploughed field (wrong side of the fence!).

How about you? Is anyone else anally-retentive enough to do the math?

I can do an offroad route that's about 32km - of which about 3km of that is public road and 29km offroad, though some of the "offroad" section is tarmac (farm tracks and cycle paths through parks, for example) so about 7% road.

It is possible to do a route that's again about 32km with about 1/2 km on public roads (about 20m out the door at home and 400m from the end of Union canal to work in centre of Edinburgh) but I never do that as the bit that misses out the longest bit of road on the route I do use with 7% offroad has 12 stiles in 2km on it and lots of steps and is just too annoying to actually use if trying to go anywhere.

That said, it's 100% road normally as it's much quicker and I am not so good at getting up in the morning to do the offroad commute!

Goddam I sho' ain't!

It was a figure of speech used in a kind of ironic, knowing way which always works to great effect on internet forums. Obviously.

Did you try the route from the Golf Club to Auchtertool?

mcmoonter,

Found it on Tuesday on the way home. The bit along the old railway line was a bit chewed up by cattle (maybe the Puddledub buffalo...?) but it's much better than peching up the road. Gary sent me details of the singletrack sections through the woods by the golf course so I'll look for them next week.

You on for a wednesday ride sometime soon?

stuartie c, your math doesn't make sense. ratio 18:72??

I know your a teach so explain to me how you came up with this answer ๐Ÿ˜›

P.s. my 17 mile commute is 100% road with 1 big f*uck off hill to climb going one way and 2 bif off hills the other way

Raddogair,

you is right - I are a teach! ๐Ÿ˜› And I made an arse of "the math":

18:82

(Don't teach maths, BTW!)

I need more hills on my commute so I can ride all the way up the Kilbo Path. That still haunts me...

However, to be pedantic about it,

18:72 is still a ratio.

Good pic Marty. I stumbled upon a Heilan' Coo calf tangled up in a gorse bush tonight - very endearing.

I work at Balwearie HS in KDY and there's a route from the school to the old landfill site about a mile east of Auchtertool. It takes a right at the entrance to the golf club and you just follow the track until it ends in some woods. At the point it runs out you'll see a gate which leads onto the old railway. Follow this to another gate and then there's a short bit through a field to the road beside the landfill site gate.

I'm looking for a link from here to Camilla Loch and the Auchtertool-Lochgelly road. Any ideas?

Are you in Burntisland?

s c , ratio 18:72 was shown you where you went wrong. ratio 18:72 is a ratio but we all know ratio 1:4 would be mathematically better put.

also, the ratio would actually be 18:81 in that case

workings = 4 x 4.5 = 18
18 x 4.5 = 81

Do i win a gold star yet? ๐Ÿ˜†

I think you'll find that it's 2:9 expressed in the most mathematically concise manner.

Schoolboy error.

Yup. Sorry, only know the roads in that neck of the woods.

have you tried magic.gov.uk for route finding? bit of a PITA to use, but good for detail.

time for a south central fife ride?

Back on topic - 100% road at the mo' (unless you count the Forth Road Bridge cyclepath as off-road).

Best ever commute was Cramond to Edinburgh Park along the River Almond. Riverside path or v. quiet roads. Lovely.

6 miles total 5 miles off road. Although if I cut through the cemetery I can increase the off road bit. As a matter of respect I don't ride over the recently departed.

Marty & Stuartie-c, there are a bunch of us in the Kirkcaldy/Glenrothes area who do Wednesday night rides. We were up in the Ladybank woods and and over to Springfield on Wednesday night. Must hae been about 23 miles mostly on singletrack.

Checkout the Leslie Bike Shop website under events. http://excoboard.com/exco/forum.php?forumid=96929

I think I could do almost all of my 16 mile commute off road, but until I get hold of a two wheeled mountain bike, I think I'll stick to the road bike.

For doing 32 miles a day I am. I just don't have the time to spend 4 hours a day riding to/from work on the unicycle, whereas I'm guessing I could do it quicker on a mountain bike, making an offroad route at least possible some days in summer.

mcmoonter, marty,

wednesday night sounds good and I should be ok for next week.

I know the west Fife trails (Dunfermline area) pretty well so it would be good to learn some central/east stuff from you guys.

Yep mine's 100:0 road. There's a perfectly good off road route, but I'm not leaving my MTB at the office, and I don't want to arrive muddy, we have showers, but bringing muddy kit into the office is a bit much IMO.
