For me, any rides shorter than 100 miles i really like Morvelo cargo V1, really comfy and really like the pockets in the shorts themselves.
For long events, Sportful Total Comfort, they have taken me to 300 miles in a day in comfort, and the two older pairs have been retired to turbo duties and are the only ones i can ride for 3 hours on a turbo without pain!
Assos entry level range for me. Expensive, but last 4x as long as other shorts I've had. 15 years out of the last pair. I was getting mine from Wiggle on discount for £80-100 but that was pre-everything going to shit.
In my experience, from least comfy to best (definitely a lot of personal preference though):
Cheap dhb.
Endura.
Decathlon.
Morvelo.
Bioracer (club kit).
dhb aeron.
MAAP.
Rapha.
Assos.
Lusso carbon shorts work very well for me, happy with 100 mile road rides on consecutive days.
I've just ordered some of their DRS shorts as I want to see if they are better off road with the 8hr+ pad, 30 miles on the rock hard south downs on a fully rigid bike and I do start to feel a bit of discomfort with the carbon shorts but I've carried on up to 75 miles recently and it doesn't get worse after 40 miles.
So bit of a tangient - but for those multi-hour rides, are folks using chamois cream at all?

You'll probably get a mixed response to this. I used to, but very rarely now. Maybe a bit of sudocrem or something to help prevent saddle stores, though usually only on multi-day rides. For 4 or 5 hour rides, it wouldn't cross my mind.
Another Galibier fan here - currently have three pairs of their shorts and two pairs of tights (as well as several other items. All quality and very comfy - I seem to have accumulated quite a lot of their kit over the last couple of years and they are my go to for most things.
Also have Rivelo/Sports Pursuit bibs which are good value, but not as comfy - tend to mainly use under baggies now.
My Castelli shorts are about 4 years old and wearing out a bit, but still pretty comfy.
