So here's my Bfe. It's the first time I've built a full bike and since I'm away from it this weekend, I thought I'd pop it on here to see what you lovely folk think... And to give me an excuse to stare at this photo. All going well so far & I cannot wait to get out on it.
The stem/spacers are just temporary until i get out on it and decide exactly what I'm after. Also need to figure out what I'm going to do about chain retention too. Swithering between a top guide only verses a full on thing like the the MRP G2 mini. Hoping to use this mostly as a play bike for short, awesome blasts of awesome.
Can't wait.
Very nice. You'll have fun riding it as well as looking at it (that's not sarcasm BTW).
Don't forget to put your chain on
Looks brilliant to me :D, would look good hanging on the wall behind the sofa.
Personally I'd go with just a top guide, that's what I use one mine with a clutch mech and alls been good so far, damn the greens nice btw! You'll love riding it
Cheers folks and thanks wolly, been wondering why the accelerations not up to much. It'll be a shame when it gets dirty and isn't allowed back in the living room!
Was hoping a top guide would do majorspaniel as i like the clean look of the single ring. Don't have any experience of a single ring to go on though. What kind of top guide are you using?
If just using a top guide to for a quality one with a thicker and stiffer back plate. The cheaper ones are very flexible and the chain will often push the plate inwards and cause the chain to jam between the ring and the plate. An e13 will work well. MRP ones are pretty flexy.
Is that the e13 xcx geetee? So is general opinion that it, along with a clutch mech should be ok?
same colour as my BFe.
I run a straitline guide. Big fan. I'd also say shorten the stem - the BFe loves to be chucked about - it's no XC rig.
Yeah that's the one Rich. For UK trails a clutch and top guide only works just fine. May even work just fine for most everything else as well.
R1chtea, iv got a e13 top guide and am using a renthal sr4 chainring, my chain guide is a e13 lg1 trail with the bottom part removed and just using the top guide, hope this helps
Great stuff, that's just what i wanted to hear geetee. Reggie, i've managed to line up a 70 & 50mm stem with no rise to try along with 90mm that's on there. Am hoping a shorter one will do but need to get out and ride it!
What's occuring with the saddle?
Nice shagpile rug
Looking good. My green Bfe arrived y'day, replacing a classic soul. Use a short cage saint mech, 1x9, and just a bash guard and n gear jump stop.
Also use a 55mm stem and 20mm spacer under it.
Seat angle looks a bit funny, but otherwise it's very nice indeed. Not seen that green before - it's lovely. I even think the wheels look good, which is odd as I normally hate white rims. Nice work! 🙂
like the green. what size is the frame?
Looks lovely, very jealous...Fancy selling it? 😀
I'll have a look at that lg1, cheers majorspaniel. Glad the rug is getting some love, definitely sets off the green. I'll pop a shorter stem on for the first ride. The furthest i've been so far is about six foot across the living room, hence the odd seat, stem and spacers.
The green is lovely, even better in real life i'm sure. It's a medium frame nick and not quite just yet holster!
Why did you trade up(!) to a bfe scamper?
Just felt like a change for a bit and it can take a reverb which the classic soul can't - all components are swapped across.
Is anyone running their (new) BFe with a 120mm fork? Thinking of a build and wondering what kit I can use... I know it'll take 100 - 160 so imagine something in the middle is best for general duties, but interested to know the options. Cheers 🙂
A Hope seat tube mounted guide means you wouldn't have to take the cranks off again to fit it.
Strong like bull too.
Probably.
Seemed mixed from what i read gonetothehills, loads of people saying 120 was the sweet spot but then plenty of people loving 140 and 150. I've spaced my Revs down to 130 for starters.
I like the look of those hope guides, especially the ISCG mount ones. I think it was on here i read a thread about them that was saying if you mount it close enough to the chain ring you might get away with out a bash ring? I'll need to look it up..
Rich, I'll be running my revs spaced to 130 with plenty of sag. I found the soul responded and cornered best with less travel, but it's only small differences and you want a compromise - climbed perfectly well at 140 too.
Is that saddle brown or tan? Charge do a nice green customised version but it's £70 - a pity as they did a cheap black one with orange stitching and base plate which looked great with orange bikes.
Very niiiiice, grips will match the saddle after the first ride (this is good). How tall are you?
I run my bfe at about 120mm, feels best to me. Did wind it out to 160 for Morzine though!
Can I ask what ring your using up front? Have been thinking of swapping my triple slx to a single for a while, be good to get some feedback.
If I was you, I'd buy this:

Not mine, I use the same guide on my Ragley though and it's perfect.
I love that green 🙂 120mm feels about right for the BFe I reckon.
I use a 32T up front with a 11-32 on the rear, it's fine for mostly climbs but when it gets really steep I tend to either get knackered or lose grip!
Cheers for the advice! And rich - that's going to be a very nice looking bike.
chvck - Memberor lose grip!
Aye- most of the time I can push a higher gear than the traction will allow, low gears aren't just about tired legs.(lots of 1x10 fans getting annoyed in the snow and mud!).
it's no XC rig.
well, it kind of is though, isn't it... same geometry as the soul, which is a XC rig...
nice looking rad, mind...
I'm looking forward to playing about with the travel height scamper but yeah, figured less was best for starters. It's a tan spoon saddle, less than £20 so can't be bad.
I'm just about 6ft tall & it's an On One ring on what was a double slx crank.
I don't want to totally ruin it for xc as it's usually a wee ride to the more fun trails.. i'm expecting to end up with a 70mm-ish stem, but we'll see. Still not totally convinced on which guide.. The e13's seem to get out and out love whereas a few folk complain about the strength of the mrp. I think i'm debating between an xcx or a lg1 with a lower off but ready for if i get hooked on gnarlier stuff? tis pricy though...
Depends on your definition of "play bike"
I would have thought forks at 100mm and a 50mm stem on there would be about right.
