[#5106805]

It's not something I've had to worry about before but once a week I now have to be at nursery to pick my boy up.

This journey follows a short & v busy section of the M62. Last nights fuel spillage at Ainley Top made me over 30 mins late.

I need a heads before I leave work so it's digital radio or iPhone, any tips?

Cheers guys, although the RAC let me down last night ๐Ÿ™

Do TomTom's do live traffic? Could I switch one on before I leave work?

Google maps has a traffic option you can tick. I do that before i set of from Derby to sheffield to decide if it's A38 or M1 night...

simply look at leeds on google maps, then tick the traffic box

I'll give that a go Chris. Allthegear, I've googled Tomboy and I'm not sure what you mean? And all the traffic apps get poor reviews. The RAC one let me down badly on Friday ๐Ÿ™

TOmTom with subsricption does live traffic though when it gets really bad it just sends you to roads with no traffic cameras on.

As mentioned above the google maps app is very good. It's ok on the iPhone but the android version is excellent. Especially using the sat nav - click the ETA to zoom out and show traffic and alternate routes, much slicker than my old tomtom and no subscription needed. I reckon it's saved me a few hours of sitting in traffic jams!

this company supplies the the info everyone else uses. the lite app is free and very good. have tom tom and use the live service but no one can supply real 100 % info as things change so quickly

After 3 years of commuting daily on the M1/M62 I cabn confirm that nothing is truly up to date.

RAC Traffic is very poor ie huge time delays in real time info. Google maps is much better and the basis of where to start looking but was still never truly real time or accurate ie would show M62 as moving freely but actually at a standstill.

The only way I found that worked was to look at the traffic cameras

If you're on Twitter then follow any local reports.

I'm with muddyfuel, use google maps app and put in your destination, turn off the voice and add traffic layer then click the ETA and it'll zoom out and give you the route overview. Nice and simple, overlays the road in green/yellow/red, and as you drive it gradually zoom in as your route gets shorter.

Seems very quick to update...does anyone know if the app sends speed data back to Google as it does sometimes show traffic data for non trunk routes, especially when an incident means more people are travelling on alternative routes?

I have a Tom Tom with LIVE and it's pretty up to the minute, it uses speed data from other Tom tom's to highlight problems in seconds.

In absence of that you can visit www.trafficengland.co.uk which is highway agency site, you can view reported problem, look at the cameras etc etc or download the highways agency's free app which does the same.

Another option is keep an eye of the info on gantries, it'll tell you of any delays but normally by then its too late as you're too close to the problem
