Im going to be removing the outer ring on my SLX chainset in the near future so i can run a double and bash. I'll be using a Blackspire Stinger chain tensioner ( ive heard there good at what they do?) and am wondering whats the best double ring bash guard to run? Not looking to spend too much, maybe around £60. Would i be best of looking at second hand at that budget?

Thanks in advance

Nick

you can prob pick up an unused shimano SLX or Saint bash for peanuts as all the brand whore lover boys swap them out for
an E13 or similar.

i bought a new Saint guard for 5€ on classifieds.

A bash-guard shouldn't cost £60! Depends what you want it for a bit too. There a plenty of light alu ones, which are mainly just for keeping the chain on the chain-ring (though there are beefier ones too, like the Straitline above). If you're going to be hitting stuff with it I'd go with a polycarbonate one. I've got a Blackspire Ring God C4 and a Gamut one now, both of which do the job, and are lighter than some others.

Just look on CRC for an idea of price.

How hard do you expect to whack the guard?

Hard- E13 Turbocharger
Gentle- Gamut P30
Not at all- BBG

Or, just whack on a cheap heavy one which is the right size.

Blackspire C4. Given it a couple of clouts since it went on a month ago with no problems.

Oh so true! But beware, the SLX M665 bash guard doesn't fit the SLX M660 cranks without getting the file out. BCD is the same, but the distance between bolt and lug on crank spider is slightly larger on the M665 - to allow for a bit thicker plastic surrounding the chainring bolt hole - see below....

My E13 Turbocharger cracked at all four chainring bolts after just a couple of dings off logs. I put the ugly Shimano one back on, and no problems since. Guess there's a reason those clever guys at Shimano made the plastic thicker around the chainring bolts on the M665 bash, even tho it means it doesn't fit 'standard' Shimano cranks.
