Hi there, upgrading my whole bike and next on the list is wheels. Im basically looking for a budget set of wheels to improve over the stock Spesh Wheelset I got on the hardrock. So are Superstar Components a worthy option or is the poor customer service warranted, ive read about them and am less keen now than before. Am I best going for some Mavic Crossrides for £140 from CRC?
i got some of the cheep £90 SSC ones and they are great, had a slite problem at the start, so sent them back and got a naw set with in days, there costomer service is getting better. Dofo worth the £90 i paid.
phone or foreign?
I'd get something off merlin. deore hubs on some decent rims. would be a whole lot better than factory built stuff like crossrides etc.
For a couple of quid more a pair of crossrides, they are pretty robust.
Have some second hand crossrides I'm about to sell if your interested.
This looks a decent deal includes reasonable tyres as well for £120

If you can stand buying from Germany, these are pretty good: Red Metal 5. Shipping's pretty cheap and quick anyway. I bought some in the winter and they've been excellent since. They're maybe a bit more cheapo XC than AM though(?), but they've taken a fair battering with me a never needed truing yet.
I have SSC ones very happy with them.
Crossrides are good for the price. Look nice, seem quite tough and only a little bit heavier than Hope XC/X717's.
Check out the handbuilt from Merlin. Should be able to find a combo to suit there.
Another happy Superstar rider here
just recieved my SSC switch hubs on spank rims - £165. hubs seem well built and sealed...and handbuilt too. they're DH/FR rims though.
SLX are just over £100 aren't they? I've got some of the Shimano MT15s on my hardtail and they seem spot on. Running them with 2.35" Maxxis tyres for rocky tech stuff and they've been faultless so far. Only 'complaint' is that they're centrelock so had to spend £15 on some CL>6-bolt adaptors from SSC.
Mavic 717's on XT hubs at Merlin?

Ended up looking at those wheeld last night benman. And on the custom wheels I built the same spec ones but with DT Swiss Comp Spokes but that added £30 more to the set than those sale ones with the only difference being stainless steel spokes.
I got a pair of SLX hubs on 719 black disc rims with black DT Comp spokes from CRC a few months back for £150. 20mm front hub and both centrelock disc
Not sure how much the set is now but it was bloody cheap then
I've got a set of '09 crossrides on my HT and they've been great, coped with everything from the peaks to wales, haven't put a spoke wrong in 15 months
Wow, just like me, I'm looking for a nice new pair of wheels for my Spesh Hardrock. I like the look of the 09 Crossrides from Merlin for £124.
i would, without a shadow of a doubt, get xc717s on xt hubs for around £140. can't go wrong.
Another vote for XM717/719 on whatever hub you can afford; for the simple reason that I'd never go near a wheelset with pinned rims. Have seen the pinned joint, admittedly perhaps a freak failure, go on some Crossrides during a ride.
SSC are doing some special offer Switch hubs on Spank Tweet Tweet rims for cheap money, you would pay around £100 just for the rims
