As a present, so not home brew. Budget up to about £150. Is a Hope 1 any good or do you need to go to 2?
See that P7 tag at the top, click on it and read the P7 lighting threads, this is nota wind up the P7 much better than a the Hope 1, 2 and only just beaten by the Hope 4 - definitely not beaten on price though.
Trout @£100 iirc + smudge battery or second hand lummi one more lumens and bike specfic
P7 is very good value for money though but lacks bling value which may or may not be an issue for you /them

Not mine, mine's brighter than a Hope Vision 4 even!
Really can't emphasise how good they are, and what value for money too. The only issue is the battery life, but if you buy a 2 mode and cycle the light to low power for flat or uphill riding, and only use full power for any technical or DH stuff, you can get 2 hours plus use out of one battery (1 hour or less on full power only), and it's not an issue to carry a spare fully charged battery really.
mboy i was being kind, Hope 4 owners tend to get all shirty when you suggest that a £45 torch is better than there £300 light...
LOL, ain't that the truth. Same goes for the several U.S.E Exposure light users I ride with regularly... 😉
£45 including 2 batteries and a charger... My torch was about $37, or about £26 the time I bought it, free shipping included.
Honestly, Believe the hype!
sell the wife and kids and get a set of Lupine betty's
Lupine for me, sell a kidney and get one. More candles than a pope's funeral. Betty for the bars and Tesla on the helmet.
count, I'd rather give Dealextreme or trout my hard earned cash than those muppets @ lupine (edison 5 owner)
exposure joystick
Ay Up !
exposure joystick
Ive got a couple of P7's left from my latest order if you want one?
I'll give you everything you need with it.
email if you're interested

Ay Up !
Agree with Ay up's. Great light with the helmet and handle bar lights. you get 2 x 3 hour batteries for the helmet and a 6 hour battery for the handle bar. you get a nice light through the whole life of the battery. price is good too...just a shame ay up operate only out of OZ now.
lightman, just tried emailing you but it bounced back.
Would be interested in the p7, how much?
I'd also be interested lightman!
sam i emailed last night - 2008 480 lumen hope vision twin led used 6 times max - £100 if you collect from Hope, or £110 posted
P7's now down to $30 on DealExtreme
add on one of 5mudge or turboferrets battery packs and you're up and running from about £45 (plus charger and batteries)
R_R I hate to pee on your fire but why would he buy a Hope 2 when for £100 when a P7 for £40 new pisses on it?
He could have 2x P7, and more light than he needs for less than £100.
I have a hope single on the bars and a P7 on my helmet - I don't even see the Hope light's beam until I turn the bars and it lights up the dark of to the side where I'm not looking. 🙄
P7 4 batteries + charger = ~£40
Whatever happened to all those Tesco torches? That's what I want to know.
dunno never saw one... i only bought a P7 to get my m8's to ride around dusk, then found it more powerful than my HID.... believe the hype.
Those tesco torches are but blips of light on the ground compared to a P7...
if someone actually wants a bike light, there is a lot to be said for a 'proper', dedicated, bike light, not that i'm disputing the P7s output.
as for the joystick, well i can get 80% of the light for 2xAA batteries, a cree wf 606a, and mount on my lid with an 'o' ring, for 15 quid, but i'm well aware that this completely contradicts what i said to start with 🙂
A P7 with an external battery pack and a proper mount really is fantastic value, and is really easy to do - see below for a mod I did for a mate.

Well let me think - bike specific, quality product, uk support - shall i go on pissing on your cheap HK torch bonfire??
i just got my troutlite through this morning, still waiting on the battery from smudge (tis ok i only ordered it 2 days ago!) but 1st impressions are that it is a very well made/designed light and very compact, much smaller than i thought it wa going to be from the photos.
well pleased.
i also have some ayups bought from when they started over in oz, and they have been faultless, so i'd recommend them also.
r_r how can you pi** on my HK torches fire, with a light thats far behind in LED technology that a oustripped by a torch a 1/4 of the cost?
Don't see you pi**ing on anything with that.
I buy british when it's worth supporting, not for the sake of it - I've got more sence than that..
(owner of 3 sets of hope wheels)
So what happens when your HK superlight breaks as many have done? if mine does - back to hope it goes and back to me within 2 days good as new.
PWNED
Big, bulky, unreliable, short run time, no specific mount - ah the wonders of strapping a cheap torch to your bonce!
Big, bulky, unreliable, short run time, no specific mount
Big + Bulky? Hardly! Sure it's a bit bigger than an Exposure Joystick, but it has almost 4 times the light output. Compared the the Hope Vision 1, a supposed Helmet mount light, it's lighter and more streamlined as well as much brighter.
Unreliable? Not that I know of! But if you do have a problem, Deal Extreme are a legitimate company. Sure, you'll get a quicker turnaround from Hope being as they are UK based I imagine, but Deal Extreme are hardly likely to leave you in the lurch. Not had a problem at all yet though.
Short run time? Well yes, on full power it's only an hour on one battery. Full power is bloody bright though, low power setting is still brighter than a Hope Vision 1 or Exposure Joystick, and has closer to 6 hours run time from a fully charged battery. On my 2 mode torch, I run it on low power for most riding, until I get to a technical bit or a fast DH, when I switch it to full power, before switching it back to low when I'm back to gentler trails. I carry a spare battery in my camelbak too, but have not yet needed to use it, even on a 3 hour night ride, by being vigilant about switching the power settings according to what I'm riding.
No Specific Mount? Indeed, but the $2.50 rubber block with velcro straps from Deal Extreme is probably better than most company's specific mounts! Holds the torch firm, no slipping and no vibrations etc. What's the issue?
turboferret, intersting but I have no facility for nodding the torch, be intersted when you can offer the mid service!
Racing_ralph you'm living in a dream world on this, let alone the fact that you think the lights so great you selling it, buying a P7?
🙂
extra 120 quid just to have a oh so specific light mount, and not have to stop for 2 minutes to change a battery every hour (if you really need to run it on full beam as said above), what's the rush?
LOL
Carl,
As you ordered a 'special' with a fuel gauge i'm just finishing it off and will be posted Friday latest to you.
Gary,
I'd be happy to mod your torch for a small fee - drop me an email turboferret@gmail.com
Cheers, Rich
what is the beam pattern like on the P7 lights?
and what O-ring do you use to hold the light to the bars? is it a secure fixing or should i try bodging an old light holder?
Rather than talk crap and take over this guys post, would it not make sense to answer his question??? Did any of you actually read it, or did you just fancy another bit of banter along a my lights better than yours route???
As a present, so not home brew. Budget up to about £150.
I have the larger hope sam, and its a damn good bit of kit. Mate has the vision 2 and that seems spot on too.
Another one im impressed by is LIM Stella... makes a wikid head torch on its own, gives up to 180lumens @ 3.5 hours i think!
CH - the P7 is not home brew, it's a torch that can be used for cycling.
Home brew is getting lots of bit and build it up (turboferrets upgrade kit is a great way of exptending the possibilities of the P&, not home brew, as it is a complete kit).
If you bothered to read about them rather than be a sheep, you'd realise our P7 suggestion is a damned cheap way of getting into night riding, instead of paying a premium for a "specific" bike light.
Your bike specific light suggestion are great, until you realise you have to spend £150 to get them and what happens if he decides night riding is not for him.
I can't help that R_R decided to tout his light on a forum thread, and then tries downplay the P7 abilities, when a large amount of ppl on here have got them and experience there fantastic value.
Personnally I believe when a question like this is posted, we should try to steer the posted to the best value options, whether they take it on board is up to them.
I agree the P7 is a good bit of kit, I work in lighting after all, and have the brightest 10 Watt Led on the market for domestic use.
However the poster seems to be after a bike shop bought box set, the P7 is a mash of torch and battery pack.
Hardly what i'd like to recieve as a present!
Another vote for the Ay-Ups - bought a set at the end of last year and been very impressed. Was concerned that the closure of the UK distributor but no need to worry. Had an issue with the 6 hour batter and issue was handled superbly by the Ozzie Ay Up guys.
the P7 is a mash of torch and battery pack. Hardly what i'd like to recieve as a present!
I could not disagree more, but thats what these threads & all of the above posts are all about.
except the op asked for it specfically to NOT include DIY /homebrew stuff
As a present, so not home brew
P7 sounds like the way to go, though I don't want to be drilling it before giving it to someone.
Torch, mount, charger and a few batteries so they can be changed when it runs out would be cool non?
JY 🙄 how can you call a torch a homebrew kit?
Ourkidsame, troutferret's extra kit could alway be purchase afterwards, if he need to extend the capabilities, none of my m8's require it's use for a 'normal' 1-2hr nightride.
Do be aware that it can take 2-4 week to come through from Dealextreme (they are in HongKong and it's free post), just bear that in mind if you need it soon. Otherwise some ppl are selling them off on the classifieds if you need it quicker than that though.
Nothing homebrew about a torch solution, that's just nonsense. Though it's nice to see a new excuse for not buying a torch, instead of the usual tired nonsense 😉 Why on earth would anyone still recommend a Joystick? It's basically just a far more expensive, far less bright torch that happens to be marketed as a bike light.
Buy a pair of P7s and a couple of spare batteries, at this price Nothing else short of the super-lights make any sense at all any more. A pair out-beams most proper lights, and costs about 1/3 as much as anything which can match them. (A mate of mine runs a set of Ayups and a Seca, and he has me beat, with his
Sure, you have to swap batteries every hour and ten or so on full power, if you don't get a battery pack, which to hear some people speak is the end of the world... It takes 20 seconds to change battery, it is no hardship at all, especially since you'll generally be stopping from time to time anyway. But in return, you get unlimited ride span- if you decide to keep riding all night at full power, all you need is some more batteries. And of course, if you want you can get the packs and mod your lights for over 4 hours run time on full power, which is pretty much class leading
People talk about how great Ayup and Hope's customer service is. TBH great customer service would be updating their ranges with better emitters throughout, not selling you outmoded stock for a premium price. Other than the poor output they have great products, and as soon as they do catch up they'll be well worth buying again, but right now they're just awful value for money.
My P7 worked brilliantly during the ELBNO last weekend. I had it on the bars with a L2D on my lid; unfortunately the lockblocks mount failed and I ended up wearing one torch, the P7, on my helmet for the rest of the event. Absolutely no problems and it was as bright, if not brighter, than most of the other lights.
Great value indeed, although I can absolutely see the elegance of bike specific lights rather than 'some old torch strapped to the bars'
Now, can anyone suggest a better bar mounting for the P7...
This is mine...
Well, those are the tesco torches on my commuter but I use one the same for the P7. Obviously they're both as rough as ****, I could make them nicer but I can't really see any point. If you want a completely solid mounting, then 2 jubilee clips is as strong as you'll get, but hard to adjust. The quick releases are from CRC,
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=29580
I reckon the Joystick mounts could be adapted easily for torches, for anyone who wants a professional looking mount, but this will give you a mount that's as good as any you'll find with a proper bike light, easy to fit and completely solid.
I love the nightlightning light I have got.
Pretty crap website, but great friendly service and a fantastic product
http://www.nightlightning.co.nz/endurenz%20details.htm
Just email them for a price to send it to the UK.
($399 NZ is probably about 150 pounds...)
If someone bought me a p7 torch for a gift, i would be really disappointed. its a lousy present. It don't matter if its the greatest light out there, its not a bike specific lighting system. its a torch
Hope Vision 2 would be a good gift.
Irun a Hope 2 on the bars,Light&motion Stella on the helmet well impressed granted it's over £300 worth but i don't have to carry extra batteries & hold up my mate's every hr to change batterie's 😀

I've done this with my helmet mounted Tesco torch. needed a small amount of elecy tape to keep it a tight fit but since it went on not had an issue with it. i wanted this as i wanted a mount that was specifically designed for a helmet and the joystick is just right. ideal i would say. including 2nd hand mount, batteries and charger, the helmet mounted torch cost me <£30. thats nearly 1/5th the cost of a joystick.
why pay more
imho of course!

If you were a bit quicker you'd already be waiting for your mates to catch up while you change your battery?
(Tongue firmly in cheek)

My God some people are total ingrates!
If someone bought me a P7 torch, I'd be bloody chuffed! Even if I didn't use it on a bike or anything, just as a nice torch to have to keep in the car, or round the house etc. The torch with a couple of batteries and a charger is £40 or so FFS! How much do you "expect" to be spent on a present for you by anybody?
But then it's been a bloody while since anybody bought me anything at all so maybe I'd just be grateful of anything! 😉
For that money, I;d be giving Mr Trout a call. I will be when my hid eventually packs up.
Those things pump out enormous amounts of light!!
