I am currently using a Bryton GPS 20 but am looking for a gps system with mapping & route planning (sat nav style). Most of the people I ride with have all got a Garmin system and a few have the Garmin 1000 which I understand to be on of the most recent versions with mapping.
I am not keen on the £300 price tag and have read in the past about using certain apps a bar mounted mobile phone which I am happy to do but had mixed success with the bikehub app I think it was & when running google maps with the cycling option it tends to take you on bridleways etc which I don`t really want if I am on my road bike, I do mountain bike as well but the gps is more critical for my road routing & navigation.
I might have to pay more out and currently have a heart rate monitor but would also like the cadence sensor which leads me towards the Garmin 1000 performance bundle.
I often ride on my own and am also looking to a little bit of riding in France & Italy so it may be worth the investment if the 1000 really is the ultimate GPS tool at the moment. Are there any improved versions in the pipeline? I see the 500 & 800 have had new versions but don`t have the mapping quality.

Satmap and Garmin Oregon are both options.

The latter will use your Garmin HRM and Cadence sensor
