Hi,

Like a bargain obsessed dafty I've bought a black jacket for winter road riding. In my defence the more visible colours were £££more.

So what gilet (do you think) is the best given

No need for water or wind proofing

Reasonably close fit

Yellow, or any other bright colour

Reflective

As breathable as possible.

I think I might have to end up with a windproof one. I already have a gilet. It's a  castelli gabba job. It's also back as it was half the price of every other colour.

Thank for any suggestions!

Workman’s hi viz, nice and breathable. Don’t bother with specialist cyclings ones, you are riding around on a road bike in tight fitting cloths, nothing you do will make you look cool so save the cash and you will be seen as well as any fancy outfit. You have good warm jacket for the winter, and a workman’s hi viz will go over your waterproof shell on a wet summers day as well with minimal heat retention.

On my regular cross Edinburgh jaunts I always think the most visible fellow cyclists are in the cheap hi viz yellow workwear. They just seem to ping out whatever the time of day.
Lately I have seen a lot of riders in those super reflective jackets, they seem to be made entirely of reflective material. Scarily at any time other than darkness they seem to be about the best urban camo known to man, they almost disappear like the predator. Dull mornings seem to be the worst, they are practically invisible

Polaris did some bright ones. They are all breathable as they don’t have arms!

Cheapo ones but pick those made of a mesh and take a sewing maching to them for a better fit.

Decathlon do some cheap, lightweight windproof ones. Not sure what colours they have.

I'd question the value of putting anything over a good waterproof though. It's going to reduce both breathability and waterproofness to some degree, you'd likely be better just buying a cheaper waterproof.

I've just ordered a couple of these. 1 for road, 1 for mtb. Ive destroyed the last one mtbing so didn't want to spend a load of money so took a punt on two of these. No idea if it's a good idea or not. Time will tell.

Thanks!

@slugwash I've gone for the craft one. Looks light weight, visable and breathable.

@butcher. Yes I agree, but the black was over £100 cheaper than the same jacket in any other colour.

I'd have probably gone for a hi-viz strap vest, rather than a gilet if it's something you want to wear over the new jacket.
Won't a cheap Gilet (with what looks like a windproof front) mess up the breath-ability of the jacket?

This looks like a halfway house between a gilet & a strap vest, is cheap & appears to be completely mesh, so presumably quite breathable...
