A softshell of some description would be my suggestion.
I used a cheap and cheerful Decathlon jobbie for all of last winter to great effect.
£150 or less will buy you a much better one, though I'd not like to suggest a specific one, as I have no experience of any...

Pace 3x3 Event + a merino base layer for cold & wet.

Aldi softshell + merino base for cold & dry.

Gore Countdown - very nearly waterproof but without the feeling of a shell jacket, nice and warm, windproof and a really good mtb cut to it. Honestly, try one on and you'll see how nice it is.

I agree with colin27. I have an insulated Windstopper jacket for winter and it's fantastic even at temperatures well below freezing. Breathes surprisingly well and is fairly waterproof.

A cheap pertex windproof. With varying layers underneath depending on temperature.

A cheap Decathlon softshell, layered up as needed.

In the last 3 years the weather has not been bad enough for me to need more than my softshell and an UnderArmour base layer. Mine even has underarm vents!

I shall be keeping a close eye on this thread. My budget is £80-100

Endura MT500 hooded!

Agreed, love mine to bits. The hood is the best thing in the world when its raining. Love the sound of the rain falling on it whilst you're wrapped up nice and dry 😀

My answer would be that for many there isn't one. I find that two does the job. One that's just water/windproof that goes over other kit but doesn't in itself provide much warmth for most of the winter and then something else that's warm (like a softshell) for the really cold rides. I find that a softshell is much too warm for most of the winter but YMMV.

Gore Phantom for me. Warm enough, not waterproof but keeps enough off and if you get too warm then you can unzip the sleeves.

Also got a light pertex windproof I always keep in my pack for those days where a jacket would be too much.

I like jackets with hoods on. I got a Nike ACG made (by child slaves) from Goretex in TK Maxx for £40.

I've got an Altura Attack jacket. Its nice and waterproof and stops the wind coming through. In winter months I simply wear a long sleeved base layer underneath and find it is up to the trick (it served me throguh the snow and frozen months up in lancashire last winter). Theyre £120 at merlin but additional 10% off too so just over £100!

There isn't one IMO either. I use an Endura Stealth when it gets really cold but it's too warm otherwise (at which point I use a more breathable softshell like a Gore Phantom)

I have a Dakine Zypher rain jacket, so it's a softshell for the cold days I'm after. Looking at this, but Mavic are relatively new to the clothing scene. Looks good though...

I've found Paramo to be a revelation the last two winters. Utterly waterproof, far more so than any GoreTex I own, and really comfortable to wear as it's hugely breathable. It's also really easy to repair if it gets damaged. Needs to be pretty cool before it's suitable though,

The version I have has a full length zip, vents on the front of the arms, massive rear vent and a detachable hood, but I couldn't find it in 30 seconds of searching. That may indicate I'm rubbish at searching, or that you can't get it any more.

For winter... Endura Stealth

Not for Autumn / Spring though, unless you feel the cold.

I have an espoir, I've not had it too long but it has been used a bit. It's a nice cut and fits well, its too warm for double figure weather but I haven't had it when its been really cold so I can't say how warm it will be when it turns baltic. It's fairly waterproof, have been out in prolonged rain (AKA Scottish summer) and not got wet. The cuffs aren't waterproof though. Overall, so far it does the job well and I'd happily buy another.

Iain

Very pleased with my Solomon Fast II, cost about £70. Seems quite waterproof so far and has long arms. It's warm without being very thick or uncomfortable.

given that you are going to get it covered in mud and ripped by brambles, get the aldi jackets at 15quid a pop, when they get trashed you can cut them into sections and clean the bike with them
