So, we're planning an up and down Ben Lomond a week on Sunday. Apart from (looking at the weather) crampons and ice axes, would folk recommend taking the full facer or just the normal lid?
Also, if weather is terrible, any suggestions for other rides in the area?
Full face helmet wouldn't be out of place IMO ... there was still snow on the top section a few days ago so if nothing else it'll keep your ears warm.
You get to see all the terrain on the way up there so there should not be any suprises on the way down so you can take either type of helmet. Reckon on about 2/3 hiking and there is little disadvantage to taking a full face. It will be cold up there as well just now so snug ears. 🙂 Looked white further up when I saw it a week ago.
Full facer it is then, be nice to get it out the cupboard for a bit! Just hoping it thaws out a bit, but I'm not holding my breath.
Whichever you're happiest carrying 🙂 As mentioned about there's little cycling on the way up but it's maniac quick on the way down so worth taking all the protection you're prepared to carry.
It'll be very busy on a Sunday so I've aim for a very early start.
A Sunday would be the very worst day to do it. It'll only spoil the descent if you have to keep stopping for walkers coming up.
Might be an idea to go up around 5pm?
Yeah I figured it might be really busy - I'm not sure what time we're aiming for. Late might be an idea, or really early - from Snowdon experience, it's better to have to dodge walkers who're coming up rather than going down.
It is a bit iffy with snow that has been sitting as it is tramped down into ice pretty quick. Even Rose XT brakes won't slow you down on that.
Aye... I figure we can make that call when we're there, if it's bad we can always turn back and ride some lower stuff instead.
I'm crossing my fingers for an unseasonal heatwave...
