no its not, if the vehicle isn't fit for the condition should it be on the road, people know the conditions of the roads yet choose to ponce about like its everyone elses responsibility to avoid them because they thingk a manhole cover might damage their precious bike.

Having heard the crash and seen the (hospitalisation) results of someone who hit a manhole cover outside work causing him to lose control, I'm not sure it's their "precious bike" people are bothered about.

And you initially talked about potholes. Which it has been established can damage a bike and potentially cause the rider a fatal accident, and can also damage people's "precious" cars.

I tend not to swerve around potholes and manhole covers, as I know where most are and ride far out enough in the road that I don't hit them (though I did hit one last winter which had recently opened up on a dark section which flatted a 35 section tyre at about 90 psi despite my last minute attempt to hop it). I have annoyed drivers (without actually slowing them down due to the heavy traffic in the area) by doing this, but as so many assume that overtaking with millimetres to spare is OK, I sort of have to do that to be safe.

What this has to do with someone getting doored, though, I don't get. But someone is awfully defensive about being called a troll.

I am not I am doing it when folk give ridiculous views designed only to provoke a reaction.

Obviously bikes on roads and saying really daft things about it is a popular, if somewhat obvious choice on a cycling forum; trolls are not that clever nor imaginative. Who knew ?

You would think if your carbon wheel is going to shatter into a million pieces by riding on the road you maybe should be out on tougher wheels

Not roadworthy your honor?

Same principle for low profile alloy wheels on cars?

I got hurt in an accident...who can I blame?

This is really all I can see here. Assuming you're ok now, have you considered contacting the vehicle company to tell them the cost of repairs first? If they make good on that then why be a b*tch and set a lawyer on them? Nobody did it on purpose.

Any mug on a bike can see parked cars and passengers heads and figure out there's a chance someone might open a door to jump out. Action would be to slow right down. Or were you REALLY keen to get to that job you love so much that day?

And how often do low profile alloys get banged up and buckled, it's pretty common, with steels the lower wishbone will come off before the wheel.

Its almost like its the road thats the problem rather than the wheel, seems reasonable to avoid the potholes.
