Will be needing a new front tyre on 29er hardtail before the winter . Heard good things about Mary but I don't like the price 🙁 so Beaver then ? Then I suppose there's the compound issue 🙁 Any other contender out there ? Hard wearing not too lardy ?

Different animals entirely - XC vs much more gravity driven tyre. MM a better front if you can handle the size and drag.

Just spotted Merlin has got Hans Dampf for £30 even more draggy I guess ? I reckon Beaver is the winner ?

I run beaver 2.0 in winter. Really lightweight and I'm not sure how much of a hammering the sidewalls would take. Amazing grip though.

As CGG says Beaver and Magic Mary very different tyres IMO. Beaver is a great rear tyre, but I prefer something a bit bigger up front.
You can get the schwalbe tyres cheaper from Germany (you could pre-brexit anyway) and you tend not to notice the extra weight on the front so much, but you'll be grateful for the extra grip.

How mucky will your trails get?

Maybe a Shorty if its gonna be a total slopfest.

Hans Dampf excel at nothing, except slowing you down.

Beaver are good in mud, but not as good as a Shorty.

Supergravity MM is a wicked allrounder, yes it doesn't clear quite as well as a Shorty, but it's very good on big rocky descents as well. My rides are generally a bit of everything, apart from hardpack as I don't ride trail centres very often, mud, grass, rocks etc and the SGMM is the best front tyre I've tried.

I use magic mary on the front all year, does well in pretty much all conditions. I've a big beaver on the back for winter, does fine there but I don't know if I'd use it on the front. As said above, the shorty is closer to a magic mary. Might try a shorty this winter on the ht.

I just put a 2.25 Beaver on the back of my 29er and it is an incredible tyre.

Seems to work perfectly as an all-rounder as it's grip in the dry has been spot on.

Also it's way more sturdier in the sidewalls than the 2.0 Beaver.

^^^ This, with a Shorty on the front in the winter gloop.

As a front tyre, the only edge a hansdampf has over a Mary is that it's lighter and a bit better on hard pack and hard rocky trails. For all round British conditions outside of trail centres and the lakes I'd choose the mary.

Hans dampf is a jack of all all trades and master of none really. Although I find it's not too bad in the winter except in thick mud.

I have been running a conti Mountain King 2.25 Black Chilli on the front of my 29er HT for a couple of years now. I swear by it. Not to jinx it but in 2 years of competitive orienteering I have yet to have a single flat with it despite battering it down some pretty rocky trails at adrenaline fuelled stupid speeds. It also looks barely worn after a what must be well over 2000 miles (50/50 on-off road). I run a Beaver on the rear when it gets muddy and use an Ikon for the other 9 months.
