As title really, I have some second hand brakes which had an olive at the lever end when i took them apart, but people have said banjo connectors for shimano don't need olives is this true? cheers.

The Shimano ones I've used did. There's a brass pin that fits into the hose to get a square end, and the banjo is a 2 piece assembly. The olive fits over the hose and seals the system as you tighten the collar.
