You don't need to read the whole Telegraph article to get the gist. I signed up for free for one free article per week just to read this one, cos I'm a masochist.

I read that under 2% of UK children currently cycle to school. If true that is more statistically negligible than a 'great experiment'. Back in the 1980s our school bike sheds were not remotely full (most of us walked to school) yet now most *seem* to be driven to school (I may have this wrong, need to find figures)

The popular press would have us believe that we are either having a big green cycling revolution and/or are being beset by hordes of the two-wheeled monsters.

The reality is different. Surprised?

I had a discussion last week with someone of age who claims that cycling was 'hardly heard about' back in the 1950s. Yet now (thanks to the Daily Shitter et al) he's convinced that he can hardly make a car journey without encountering 'so many nowadays' pesky cyclists holding up the traffic and endangering his progress.

I remain unconvinced. (Especially after taking a local car journey with him and not seeing one cyclist.)

wtaf? It's like living in an alternate universe where the press (and public opinion) is actually opposite to actual reality.

As I understand it people didn't riot, they got on their bikes and looked for work.

It's good that. We had a "close pass" campaign here locally, which is great, but when the police post about it on their official facebook there's always a stream of posters saying "I DRIVE DANGEROUSLY, WHAT ARE YOU GONNA DO ABOUT IT". And the police just make their first post then walk away whistling, there's never any responses or education.

Tom Harris is a pure dick though

yep, asked the police here if they would speak to the people posting "I'll run the cyclists down before I give them enough room" on the Facebook announcement that they would prosecute close passes. Response was if people are abusive they will be banned from the Facebook page...
