I'm vaguely entertaining the idea of taking off on a week to ten day solo touring around the UK, starting from my home just north of London. I'm thinking about route planning and having a deep antipathy for getting lost, stopping to check maps, or finding myself on a dual carriageway I'd very much like to have a gps route to follow. Not having done anything like this in the digital age, I'm sure appropriate applications must exist for finding nice, bike friendly routes on b roads and smaller - gravel sustrans etc also welcome. So can someone direct me to a method of choosing point a and point b then generating a lovely gpx betwixt the two?
plotaroute.com may be what you seek Sam - although no first hand experience of it other than trying it out just now.
Can Save multiple routes, stitch them together, and download as GPX..
Bikehike.co.uk has a "follow road" option and can download gpx but you'd need to enter the route in stages to keep it on the quiet roads as I think it'll go for the shortest option otherwise.
On Bikehike you can overlay national cycle routes which can be quite helpful.
Worth looking at Sportive routes too.
Nice one, thanks guys, some planning to do!
Is that you Jane (Tillydog?) Aren't you at Crufts?! ๐
This is the one you want ๐

The emphasis is b roads, backroads, sustrans, that type of thing.
Always use this for camping weekends in the summer.
For several years I've done all my route planning (including all the LJDF stuff) on RideWithGPS. I find it much better than other stuff I've tried. If you want, drop me a line, happy to walk you through it if it's any use.
One downside to Cyclestreets (around here in Suffolk/Norfolk anyway) is it's tendency to send you down random bridleways and Greenlanes occasionally. A pain if you're on a proper road bike.

I can be whatever you want me to be ๐
(No, not Jane ๐ )
