AXS shifter preferences

I’ll admit I’m in the minority but for the last three years I’ve been perfectly happy with the original AXS paddle shifter. Curiosity got the better of me and I’ve bought a rocket upgrade. Admittedly only one ride in but I’m struggle to see any major benefit over the paddle. May just need more ride time to override current muscle memory.

Which shifter do you prefer and which way are your buttons assigned?

i've got the original shifter but with the paddle upgrade - I prefer the newer paddle

I've got the 'shifter pod' of the newer AXS, and think that's the best of all.

Top button for easy, bottom for hard.

I stuck with the original paddle as the upgraded one was out of stock when I bought - don't see any reason to change now.

And this:

Im up for harder, down for easier… a bit like a traditional shifter.

I'm not sure what paddle version I have

Bigger, lower button for easier gear

smaller, top button, or crucially, index finger, for harder gear

I’m on the new pod shifter, and decided on top button to go into an easier gear. Both directions feel wrong somehow, but if I’m climbing with my hands in a narrower position I can rotate the hand backwards and downshift using the bottom of my palm. Better than it sounds…

Starting to like the pod, it’s taken time though…

Tried the original and alternate SRAM paddles but can recommend the :

https://leapcomponents.com/product/quickshift/

As i can set it to be similar to my Shimano shifters

This thread made me chuckle 🤭

I have AXS shifting and reverb on the MTB, all set as it came. I have 1x12 AXS on a gravel bike, 1x11 di2 on one road bike and 2x12 di2 on another.

I have to take a minute at the start of a ride and remember an acronym to keep me tight for whichever bike I’m on 🤪

There's really only two options. The updated rocker or the wrong one.

The original AXS GX paddle can get in the sea, then a fire.  Bought the proper one a couple weeks after i got AXS and it was a revelation.  Swapped the original GX one for another proper one, just in case.

Top easy, bottom hard (fnarrr) as i feels more right. No long press shift.

Got the original and reckon it is absolutely perfect...unsure the new rocker will be any better.

Top one to a harder gear, bottom to easier gear.

got the original, don't see any need to change it.

first ride out i kept going into an easier gear at the start of descents, so now have it top easier, bottom harder

Currently using the rocker paddle. slowly getting used to it, but still finding myself selecting the wrong gear. Doesn't help that I have several bikes with varying groupsets/shifters.

Been using the original for a number of years - but I've a leap components leaver in the post to try on the dropper. I find the shifter absolutely fine, but I do struggle to sometimes activate the dropper (no idea why) so I thought I'd give leap a go.

Just fitted the Leap lever to the dropper - any one else had to mod it with a slightly larger dia hole for the bolt. As if came it would just get stuck in the pressed position and not return.....

Having tried all 3, I would rank them as follows:

1st place - Mk 1 AXS

2nd place - Mk 1 T Type Pod

3rd place - Mk 2 AXS

I always felt that it was better to have a deliberately different feel to AXS since it was unconstrained by the need to pull a cable. Hence my 1 and 2 rankings. The Mk 2 AXS just tried too hard to emulate the cable shifter.

I find that the Mk 1 T Type Pod is at a slightly odd angle and somehow when I have the lower button in the right place, the top button disappears under the grip.

Through choice I would stick with the Mk 1 AXS.

Im digging the new pod I must say, I found it almost instantly right for me compared to both the rocker and og axs ones

however as it’s standalone I cannot get it too stay bloody still on the bars, 2nm is pitiful and just spins at the lightest of touches

I’ve tried cleaning and even carbon grip paste but nothing other than going daft on the torque holds it still once I press with some pressure

sadly I’m on hope brakes and as of yet there is not direct mount to brake option as this would cure that problem all together

but I do like the new pod it feels right to me!

I'm on the new 2-button version, on my road bike (with XPLR). Works really well.

top button harder

lower button easier

(as a trad mech shifter would be)

I am in the same position. The stand alone clamp isn't moving on the bars, but my bar OCD hates the additional clamp. Looking at where the attachment on the official SRAM Matchmaker sits, I suspect that Hope are going to struggle to produce an integrated clamp, but hopefully they find a way.

I’ve tried them both way around and preferred it set up like a traditional shifter. If only because it makes it much easier to switch back to cable gears on other bikes. Unfortunately I had to give the loaner bike with AXS back after a few months because now I really really want it on mine.

@solarider

I’ve emailed hope they are on it apparently, it should be available in a few weeks which is great news that’s what I’m holding out for, if it doesn’t materialise I’ll have to get a old style axs rocker and sell this one

But hope said it was currently being designed and should only be a few weeks away

Every time I ride my brothers bike with AXS I come away with the view that the best set up for it would be IN THE BIN! Why spend all that money to get something so much worse and less intuitive to use. I hate the thing with a passion.
