In an attempt to shed a bit of weight from the bike I got a 'bargain' X01 AXS crank from CRC.
The description/spec doesn't mention anything to do with AXS so I thought it was just the crankset you'd get if you bought a full AXS X01 groupset, but the same as if you bought a non-AXS X01 groupset. The SRAM site also isn't much help, or I'm looking in the wrong place.
It's just arrived and on the non-drive side there's an AXS cap in the spindle hole, with a clicky button. I don't have any AXS kit so don't need to use it, but what is it? Can I remove it? Is it for a power meter?

I think it is a power meter. The latest power meters can be a one sided power meter in the spindle.
Download the axs app, and try and connect to it, it will confirm what it is.
Yeah, that's the power meter, if its like my rival crank then it's a one sided power meter and unscrews from the non drive side to access the battery.
Thanks, it appears to be a Flight Attendant pedal sensor, see the 3rd photo here https://www.sram.com/en/sram/models/fc-x0-1fa-c3
And here it is out of the crank:

The crankset was £185 so I'd have been very pleasantly surprised if it came with a power meter!
And from the AXS app:

I'm not fussed about cadence on the MTB so will probably just leave it out.

/a> this one?
Is this identical to the standard X01 Eagle Boost cranks, but just has a little gadget that fits inside the axle?
yeah if it was a power meter it'd have "QUARQ" on it. The Rival (road) one which slots in like that is quite cheap though! (although not quite that cheap)The crankset was £185 so I’d have been very pleasantly surprised if it came with a power meter

That's the one. The non-AXS version is FC-X0-1-C3.
This is what the NDS side looks like with the gizmo removed.
