[Closed] Avid Juicy 5 Piston Damage

[#865760]

I was trying to replace the pads on a set of Juicy 5's at the weekend. unfortunately I applied too much force when trying to move a seized piston and ended up chipping one of the edges off.

I presume this will result in weeping if I was to continue to use it.

Does anyone know how much it would cost to repair and where I could get it done? Also, can anoyone advise how to sort out a seized piston should it happen in future?

cheers

It depends how bad the chip is as to whether it will weep. Mine were pretty knackered on my old bike, but didn't leak. They appear to be made of crumbly cheese.

I actually managed to break the nipple off a piston the first time I tried changin the pads. IIRC it cost me about £70, but the LBS did spend a long time on them, some of the hours they didn't charge me for.

yeah I think Phenolic roughly translates "hard crumbly cheese" 🙂

i've just had the last uplift weekend at Fort William ruined because of these sh!tey Phenolic pistons in my juicy 7. Basically the central locator snapped off and the pads kept dropping through the brake. Granted it did snap off because of Screwdriver use to push pads apart (incidentally why has no-one made a tool for this) but I thought the "pad retainer" might have saved the day. Well, it cost £2.99 and does **** all - didn't hold the pads in either.

The pistons themselves are cheap (well they used to be about 4.99) and you can break the caliper and do it yourself - takes a few hours and a bit of patience to bleed but results are good. TBH if an LBS charged me £70 for a brake service i'd just buy a new one - Shimano SLX for £60 from CRC right now.

If the piston is chipped it depends how bad it is - mine no longer have a smooth edge but still work ok.

I feel your pain.

Every time I try and change pads on my rear Juicy 5s the piston jams. Have also snapped the central locator - which cost £60+ to repair.
These brakes now sit in my spares box and I run Shimano XT.

Blimey £60-70 to fit a new piston and bleed one brake!

As has already been mentioned the pistons are relatively cheap (£8ish IIRC) and aren't to much of a pain to remove. Obviously one can be pushed out using the lever, just make sure the other one is sticking out enough to be able to grab it with some pliers when the first one pops out.

Bleeding Avid brakes is very easy so get yourself a bleed kit if you haven't already, search juicy 7 bleed on youtube for a video demonstration.

Yep, agreed, pistons are easy enough to change. Cheap too, but I found it hard to source just the pistons.

Surely the trick is to lever the pistons back in before taking the old pads out? The old pads shouldn't cause the pistons to chip
