[Closed] Asked for identification at a cycle shop for British Discount?

[#7757949]

Today I was in a cycle shop buying a part and as usual showed my discount card and about to pay.

1) The shop assistant was unfriendly, telling me no part existed for application when I was checking the part.

2) Asks for identification before applying my British discount.

After spending quite a fair bit of cash in that chain, never been asked before for I.D. on numerous purchases there.

Guess I should wear my suit next time.

I was told it was the same as buying alcohol - yes but I'm nearly 40!

Pure discrimination on the way I was dressed?

I'm disgusted. To think I was going to spend 2K on a CAAD12 there!

You get a discount for being British? Is this a UKIP thing?

Having no idea how you were dressed, I am going to say yes?

Unfriendly Cannondale dealer you say... Was this in Rochdale, by any chance?

Did you make any reference to that? Other than just being in the shop?

What were you buying? What did you want to use it for?

This is a troll, right?

Helloing.

A)Am very displeased for the way you being treated in the past!

B)Discrimination pertaining to part application in this day and age whilst purchasing is non acceptable in spite of attire!

Appalled I am!

I also like alcohol too.

Salutations

Sorry was using the mobile and screwed up.

Man goes into bike shop.
Customer advisor was quite rude to me.
Man then wants to pay for part for £40.
Man Shows British Cycling discount card for 10% off (as done numerous times).

Man was then was asked for identification to prove ownership of the British Cycling card.

Man was told it was no different from buying alcohol.

I wouldn't mind showing my I.D. all the time to be honest, but nobody has asked this before. I believe this was because I was in my scruffs and not wearing my suit. Sure I looked scruffy from building 2 bikes.

I went into Halfords later and bought tyres, chain and a cassette, no problems and they laughed when I told them what happened.

Only problem I had with the British Cycling discount in Halfords was the bloke behind the till not knowing what to do. Asked his boss who told him to knock £6.99 off the £26.99 bill as a managers discount.

I was happy, lad on the till was confused, boss proved you don't need a maths brain to get to manager in Halfords 🙂

I'm a member of the cycling club attached to an LBS. Admittedly I don't ride the club run often, but if I go in the shop I'm greeted by name, we chat about rides, work, families.

And when I come to pay for something, I have to ask for my club discount and confirm my email to get it.

Why is it that we always have to guess!

Go on op, tell us all which shop you had the displeasure in dealing with so we at least know. Hell! You might even get an apology from them if you name and shame them from the frustrations you encountered.

I want to know what the part was. Or the application for which there was no part.

British Cycling membership gets you 10% discount on alcohol? Awesome! Performance-detracting substances obviously encouraged...

I'm curious as to the chain, because as far as I can tell from the BC website, the only shop discount is Halfords, and I didn't think they sold Cannondale.

Halfords have always been ok with me, although their staff training leaves something to be desired as all staff have needed to ask a manager how to do the discount. Never been asked for ID, but then I've got a photo on my race license.

There are discounts at Evans and CRC but they're online with a code (CRC) or on specific things (Evans).

I've never seen any point joining but that would save me a packet. Is it accepted at Waitrose?

It's all about attire when asking for your "British discount"... I can confirm from bitter personal experience that none of these work:

to be independent is to be free to be as grumpy as you like.

I worked in customer service once. customers are idiots. internalised fury is bad.

LOL! 😆

Thanks for the smiles - needed that.

Won't name them, but beginning with R and not using them again.

Halfords? well they ordered me a part that was faulty - it happens and their staff were really good. I know it depends who speak to in any shop.

Cookeea has a good picture of him in that last picture of a Nazi 😆

I guess either they took a dislike to you or a bunch of people are abusing the BC discount.

Nearly 40?

Explains a lot, the ramblings of an old man.

let's get this right.

your complaining because you got asked for I'd to prove your British discount card is actually yours.

maybe your union jack pin fell off of the breast of your shirt, so for all he knew you could of just been a relatively clean immigrant?

Your BC card has your photo on it, so why would they ask for additional ID, I'm confused???

Erm you made that bit up but you are adding it to your ire.

He's perfectly entitled to as for ID I think, esp if you've not dealt with him before.

Fair enough if he's actually been rude, but that one relevant aspect of your whine is lacking in detail.

Working in retail is pretty crap, I allow folk off-days.

I did get an apology from the manager and luckily found 3 other bike shops that are really good.

It does depend who you speak to though.
